Manoeuvre freedom is good. But - would Wot with a flat map be fun? Open - yes, but a sea rarely holds any hills or rises, for instance.

In shooter-games I like los-fights over "tactical-screen-fighting". Will Wows have radars?

How big maps are we talking about?

System-requirements? Bigger, smaller or equal to Wot?

How many maps?

Dont get me wrong, I will certainly try it (and get hooked), but I want my expectations to be reasonable.

This is WG. As such I would be extremely surprised if they give us a map with nothing but open waters. Expect a lot of islands, inlets, etc. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised to see an 'urban' map fought inside the harbor of a major city.

The reality is the ocean is never calm. As I am sure all of you know. So if they do the maps right the will always be moving somewhat. So I don't know about anyone else, but I will not hit anything with my guns. Can we say ramming mode? :P

I imagine they're going to drastically shorten the engagement ranges just as they did with WoT.

So.... we're talking about battleships duking it out at los? Possibly with lighter ships spotting?

And carriers using rts-planes as dumb scouts, or lights as scouts?

Will the planes have firepower, or just upgradable viewing-powers?

Can a carriers launch aircrafts to multiple sights at once, or fire once, then a reload?

Some many possibilities. Naturally I expect to see a certain country's battleships to be untouchable.

Carrier planes I would think get to attack ships as well as scout. Most likely sent out in either a group to attack or individually to scout. I would guess that each carrier would launch and landing abilities and then a set time to load/reload fuel and bombs. Similar to the carrier board game Flat top (I think that was it). So much of the research is done there for WWII. Info from Jutland will help with older ships. Oh I am rambling. Nevermind.

Maps will be 60x60km with each team starting 35-40km apart, not really LoS (although there is no curvature). We'll use a third person view (like in WoT), a binocular view(like sniper mode) and a top down view (like artillery). With all the islands visible in screenshots it seems scout planes will be very useful (launched from carriers, and seaplanes launched from ships). Devs say there will be no bare ocean maps as well, and that different water depths will play a large part in gameplay.

so each map will have three avenues of approach with the remaining 70% blocked by islands or shoals, and there will be numerous islands that are nothing but fingers of rock towering straight up to provide spots for the ships to hide. About all they will need to do is add in rip tides and currents to make sure that no one will ever proceed at top speed for more than 1 or 2 grid squares in a row.

I can see WoWs CW now: 1/4-1/2 of your team will be carriers with smaller ships screening up ahead. This isn't necessarily a bad thing, though. If we're excluding subs because of the limited role they played IRL we're going to have a hard time fitting battleships into the mix.

This is probably where Harold's prediction about the map design will come in so battleships have a limited role sometimes (like the E-100 in CW). ;)

Some more info on WoWs.

In particular this bit about carrier play piqued my curiosity.

While scouts are essentially fire-and-forget, players using aircraft carriers have an interesting time: they can begin the game with six or more different types of plane on their ship, such as scouts, fighter-bombers, interceptors, torpedo bombers, etc - and line up missions from this top-down view. We witnessed a carrier sending out a wing of fighters escorting a wing of bombers; the fighters took out the hostile air cover, then the bombers took out a hostile ship.

If they pull this off right they could have one interesting game-inside-a-game with how carriers play out. That's a big IF with WG, though.

Another statement that credits and XP will be shared between titles. Hopefully this guy isn't just talking out of his ass.

Q: Will you unify the three games into one world?
A: That’s a good question. Every journalist asks that one. Basically, we now have three separate titles, that we will connect on community level. Players will be able to share experience, credits etc. We will introduce the unified premium account. So, if you pay 10 dollars in World of Tanks, you’ll be able to use that in two other games. The games will also be connected thru Clan Wars. But at this moment, we are not considering unifying them thru a single battlefield.
