King Sargent

I keep thinking of my first real thread here about the escort carriers... King had a theory that the full size carriers weren't that hot and more escort carriers would have done better. I was new and decided to duke it out. After a long time he posted that I had done pretty well for a new guy. Never did convince him that the escort carriers couldn't do the job alone. Later he came in with one of the I&I trips to Kentucky and played around with my .45 from WW2, really knew his way around it. A good guy who added immeasurably to the forum. It'll sure be different now.

I just saw the Military History Forum had been renamed - it came as quite a shock.

I had the honour to have King stay at our homes here and in Belgium. In 2004, when I was effectively unemployed, King paid for me to accompany him all over the UK for three weeks going to museums. He also lent my wife the money for a dye sublimation printer. When he visited us in Belgium, pre 911, he produced a ceramic belt push dagger that he was amazed he'd been able to smuggle onto the plane on his person - it could have been worse, he's wanted to bring me a Makarov! He was an amazingly generous guy, highly knowledgeable and great fun to be around. He was one of the great characters of TN and will be sorely missed! I'm really gutted!

Been away for a week and just got back to see that King has passed away. To my everlasting regret I missed hooking up with him during his 2004 jaunt with Chris. RIP my friend.

Sigh, what's really hitting me is that several of the threads in his forum are so obviously Sargent's red meat, it feels flat out wrong to read about daylight bombing campaigns or his favorite Pacific General without his views. As I was often in awe of his encyclopedic knowledge about topics, I really find myself missing his dry-witted contributions.

Was thinking the same thing when readin ghte latest posts in the 'MacArthur Screw ups' thread.

King cast a long shadow and his absence from many discussions will be all too prominent for quite a while I suspect. :(

And any discussion about Haig, not involving King will feel...poor and lacking.

we will have to suspend all talk about Monty and Market Garden

He could be quoted in absentia from existing and archived threads. I have the Overlord 1943 threads of 2004, 2006 and 2008 archived, and 2 years have passed....

Hope not, given the number of misconceptons still floating about that King did *not* largely subscribe to... :)

RIP. I just saw the posting now. I have been on Brunk's site since 1998 and then onto Tanknet. Having read KingSargent's posts for so long, it feels like a close friend is gone. :(

(P.S.: Having checked in a lot because been busy preparing for the arrival of our first child)

Congrats. Get your sleep in now, you wont for about a year when your child arrives. This is not a joke.

Again, congrats on a soon to be unimaginably wonderful and truly scary part of your life. Buy lots of instant coffee. And formula.

And feel free to post any question or queries - or feel free to PM me - here on TN. Many of us have done this several times in the past, and you have quality people here (minus a few jackasses. But I'm cleaning up my posting style)

Been away for a week and just got back to see ...

So also I have been away. Just noticed the re-named history forum, and went looking for the explanation.

I was fortunate enough to get to meet King, and spent time with him at a couple of the I&Is. For a mil history buff, there are few experiences that could compare with sitting around with a bottle of hootch talking and debating generals, weapons, or strategies and tactics with the likes of King.

A deep well of knowledge has now been sealed over. Fortunately, many of us were allowed to draw from the well over the years, and so it's flow is not abated.

And after all that is said, he was also a very nice guy.

Bless you, King Sargent. You will be missed.

I guessing that he is showing Elvis who the real King is.

Ding ding ding! Juan gets the prize--whatever it is-- :P

Yep. Elvis is likely crying like a girl, just to be anywhere near KS.
