Ken's trip to the desert

Vortex is probably not the best of Bond's books. Red Phoenix is a whole lot better, and Cauldron just takes a fun twist on things...

Bond, if nothing else, will get the naval bits right. He -did- write Harpoon, after all.

Yeah, I have read all those books and it still requires far too much accepting ignorance on the part of the reader. Not that I really expect any different, it's just that I have too great a technical background and too little suspension of disbelief to accept any of it. I don't watch much TV or many movies either, it just doesn't entertain me anymore. The loss is mine.

I've been looking into that foreign auto sales program, it's very tempting. I'm off to the Camp Liberty PX tomorrow IOT do a comprehensive recon. Been looking at a 2005 Mustang GT, a Dodge SRT-4 or perhaps a Volvo C60, all with the manual tranny. We'll see....

Been using my down time to rationalize my firearms inventory as well. Going to part with some things IOT improve the remaining inventory as well as procuring some new toys. The cost of quality optics is getting worse and I get dealer pricing. Been considering the new Leupold 1.5-5x20 M3 scope for a GP 6.8x43 work carbine. It's still in the planning phase but it's a definate possibility. Probably just going to get a 6.8x43 setup for my LMT CQB upper and use a Larue quick detach rig for the scope. Just using ballpark numbers, I'm looking at about $5K in order to get to where I want to be. The pull of the PMC job is strong... S/F...Ken M

They pay for your toys in the PMCs? Your read about the company that's distributing knock off ACOGs made in the PRC right? Trijicon slapped a cease & desist on them after they had the brass ones to show the sight at SHOT!

6.8SPC is going to be expensive to feed unless you reload. What's the major trick to the monolithic frames other than barrel swapping?

Heard on CNN last night that 26 nationalist reistance fighters were chewed up after hitting a convoy yesterday with 3 MPs wounded. Any info on that particular incident? I'm thinking they met a platoon of ASVs.......

Stars and Stripes report that it was a KY NG unit, and I have my ideas who it was. The shame is that it was in our former AO and we should have been out there. I can believe it was a section of MP's running drag on a real convoy, that is a strong possibility.

6.8 will be no problem to feed, I'll just switch the Dillon 650 over from 5.56. A case of factory ammo will get you through an entire campaign. The MRP/CQB are great for the switch barrel combined with rails on a freefloating platform. They are light as you can get on a FF design. PLus they are not as prone to getting out of alignment when you start bashing people, as is the case with the handguard replacement 1913 rails.

Yeah, found out no Volvo. The prices quoted really were not very much better than what I can get locally. 25K for a 2006GT is good deal, but not great, and the 2005's are no longer orderable. S/F...Ken M

It was the 617th MP company from Kentucky.

26 terrorists killed during attack on coalition forces

BAGHDAD, Iraq – At approximately noon on March 20, 26 terrorists were killed, seven wounded, and one captured when they attacked a coalition force convoy on the outskirts of Baghdad in the Salman Pak area. Seven soldiers were injured during the attack. A U.S. military convoy and its security element from the 617 Military Police Company was patrolling when the convoy was ambushed by approximately 40 – 50 terrorists with rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire. The convoy became disabled and the 617 MP’s maneuvered to flank the terrorists. Apache air support was called in but didn’t participate in the engagement. The Apache remained in the area to provide additional support if needed.

Military personnel recovered six RPG launchers, 16 RPG rockets, 13 RPK (machine guns), 22 AKMs (assault rifle), more than 2900 rounds of ammunition, and 40 hand grenades from the terrorists.

Every day soldiers guard convoys across Iraq’s most dangerous roads. In recent days, this road has had increased attacks on coalition forces. On March 18, there was another complex attack at almost the same location. The attack consisted of RPGs, mortars, and small arms fire from both sides of the road. No U.S. soldiers were injured in this attack.

Only the buff colored ones are.  The rest are going below sticker price. ;)

Apparently the Mustang's dash lighting can adopt any one of about 65000 colours...

  • 3 weeks later...

OK, finally back at home in Chicago. We had a giant welcoming comittee when we arrived at Midway airport. We had a police escort from Midway to the Allstate arena where the families were waiting. It was overwhelming. Over 5000 people came out. It was like some sort of giant rock concert. Utter chaos. Everyone trying to find their families in the milling about. But no one was complaining. Afterwards, large BBQ with the family and friends that a surprising amount of people came out for. For me, coming home was not a major event, for everyone else it seemed to be a huge gala.

Today I'm going though all the piles of gear that I accumulated, doing laundry and getting back into the usual routine. A surprising amount of the stuff I brought was never used. KISS was the order of the day. Guess I should not have been surprised. S/F...Ken M

Welcome home EchoFiveMike from a former(1982-3) "doc." I was with 3/6 mostly and 2/6 for a little while. How did my corpsman do? Again, welcome home and thank you for the job you and others have done/are doing.

Ken....Better to have carted it all over and not had to use it than wished you had it but didn't. Never did ask .....did they serve you pork products out there? (I'm guessing they did)?

Welcome back and see you in a few weeks for some Falafel....
