HANS
Thats why the quantities are relatively large How large? But again, it is my word against your speculations and inventions. I'm just wondering. Why didn't they ask FN, who invented the thing? Cheers HANS

KingSargent
No real point in developing anything NEW until we reach a Quantum Leap in ammo tech - caseless, FAE, EM impulse, MetalStorm, Energy Weapons... MAGs and MG42s (MG1-3s to be akkurat) are like the Brown Bess - perfectly adequate until Something Totally New is fielded. IOW, if we continue to rely on Brass Cartridge Cases and gas or recoil operation, why fix Whut Ain't Broke...?

D.E. Watters
It reads as if Colt may be building complete M240Bs; payback for the FN M16 contract? TACOM has been trying to spread the love in order to maintain, and hopefully, expand the US small arms industrial base. They've even placed solicitations open to second-sourcing the M249. Simon Tan
That base would be immensely strengthened by the repeal of the 86 MG Ban.
Dawes
Looks like M240's isn't the only small arms-related item TACOM Warren has contracted for: http://contracting.tacom.army.mil/confls/a...75BR04/0000.pdf
D.E. Watters
It was pointed out to me that TACOM-Rock Island's functions are to be transfered to TACOM-Warren due to the 2005 Base Realignment and Closure action. Everything has to be moved by September 2011. It will no doubt be a disaster in terms of the loss of experienced civilian personnel as previous closures and realignments have shown. Dawes
FN cames back with another award: FN Manufacturing LLC., Columbia, S.C., was awarded on Sept. 24, 2009 a $9,933,440 firm-fixed-price contract for a quantity of 15,521 M16A4 rifles base. Work is to be performed in Columbia, S.C., with an estimated completion date of Apr. 22, 2010. Three bids solicited with three bids received. U.S. Army TACOM, RI, Rock Island, Ill. is the contracting activity (W52H09-08-D-0121).
D.E. Watters
Good grief... What was the rationale for shutting down Rock Island? Didn't the Illinois congressional representatives have enough juice to prevent it? They managed to save the Arsenal itself as the whole facility had originally been on the chopping block. The Army Sustainment Command and the Joint Manufacturing & Technology Center will remain there. Some activities are even being imported from other closed bases. As for TACOM, the BRAC commission ginned together some excuse that it will save money in the long run to consolidate similar activities. NSWC-Crane had also been considered for realignment or closure with its functions to be parceled off elsewhere including Picatinny Arsenal. You'll note that this award like the recent Colt M16A4 award are actually delivery orders tacked on to the multi-year contracts they won back in December 2007. Colt's latest delivery order was significant since it had all but withdrawn from its initial award due to disagreements over pricing.
REMOV
Some news from Eurosatory 2010 - the new 7,62 mm machine gun from H&K has got the factory name which is HK121 and will be available at 2011/2012. It is a bit lighter than MG3 and will be more universal MG than light MG like Minimi-7,62. Israeli IWI is testing in selected units the first batch of new 7,62 mm x 51 NATO machine gun. There are some rumours that it will be weapon with... a common receiver for 5,56 mm and 7,62 mm cartridges (!). There is also new 12,7 mm (.50 BMG) externally driven machine gun with exactly the same dimensions as the old M2 Browning from Rheinmetall called RMG.50 developed in the old Mauser, now Rheinmetall Defence factory in Oberndorf. It can replace the M2HB in any application including the HMG role on the tripod (12-V battery needed). Weight about 25 kg, link and linkless (an option) fed, firing from close (sniper mode) and open bolt, fed also special P+ ammo, which makes the range of the 12,7 mm x 99 bullet similar to the Russian 14,5 mm.
