Looking For Some Information

For a close friend, whose grandfather fought for Italy in world war two, according to her in North Africa.

 

I am looking for rank, maybe some insignia and maybe the year the pic was taken. My ignorance on historical uniforms is absolute.

Flight Lieutenant, Regia Aeronautica, but that is about all I can tell from the photos. Some kind of awards ceremony, but beyond that...?

The first medal pretty sure is the Croce al merito di guerra (War merit cross) issued to all combatants. In this case the first issuance. The second one, I have no clue:
