TSJ, as mentioned I will go the extra mile and reserve the book from the library and copy passages out of it verbatim. I do think this is pushing the limits of accomodation, for a trivial point dragging an entire interesting discussion far off topic.

"The hacker got to work, and after a couple hours the exchange malfunctioned, and shut down."

You were challenged on that, which seems a pretty clear claim, but which you haven't been able to back up, or been willing to clarify that you mispoke or overstated, or whatever the explanation is; after a lot of verbose tap dancing. If it's "personal" to point out that that doesn't enhance your general credibility posting here, and state the opinion that it seems rather common in your posts, you have a thin skin.

Joseph, I have had just about enough. Please compose yourself in a manner respectful not only to me but to your status on this board. There is absolutely no need for the virulent anger expressed in every one of your posts. I'll give you my telephone number and you can leave profane messages on my answering machine, but please do not type inflammatory statements devoid of context here - they effect people other than me, by derailing discourse. I am forced to consider our discussion ended, adieu.

That's funny UN - I can't detect any anger (virulent or otherwise) in any of Joe's posts. He's just asking you to post credible and verifiable sources to back up a claim he finds dubious. That's the way this place operates. If you don't like it here, the internet is a big place.

UN, for what it's worth I wrote my Master's thesis at Georgetown on Chinese information warfare doctrine and capabilities -- I don't speak a word of Chinese so it was pretty much a noble failure, but from what I could determine China is about 5-10 years behind the US in doctrine, and even further behind in capabilities. Basically they're still spooging all over the Tofflers and RMA and "asymmetric warfare", concepts which (God, I hope) the US military played with for a while in the '90s and eventually figured out were just a little bit far-fetched.

Also, while "cyberwar" hasn't really materialized as an issue (although maybe that's because two nations that use computers a lot haven't fought each other in a while), Western IT infrastructures have faced a pretty dizzying variety of threats in a "civilian" capacity -- everything from bored teenagers to sophisticated Russian mafia attacks -- and while they haven't always been successful in fighting them off, they've learned a hell of a lot and have gotten rather better at it. And any Chinese attempts to, say, hack Wall Street are going to go up against some pretty damn sophisticated and experienced defenses.

In short, JOE's right on this...go ahead and look up "Unrestricted Warfare" if you want (that's the big sexy Chinese document that calls for massive hacker attacks), but a lot of their talk is pretty silly.

Brian,

Glad to hear from someone that know what he's talking about. The two jokers that wrote the POS "Unrestricted Warfare" were desk jocks poiltical officers from the Chinese air force with NO field experience. Nobody in the Chinese military takes their POS work seriously.

Oddly, those 2 are a lot more popular with the American and often mentioned by rightwing publications.

For the rest of you, don't take my words for it and go read it yourself.

here's a pdf version of it
