Jeff Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 All in all, we've done a pretty amazing job as a country in preserving quite a large number of vessels with the glaring omissions mentioned. We probably have one of the world's biggest navies (depending on how you score it) as museum ships. Would like to get down and see the Olympia and the New Jersey. Not sure if I'll ever get to see the Texas.
Argus Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Jeeez you lot don't know when your well off do ya.... I've got an 1868 breatwork monitor sitting on her side about 3km from my desk thats in such bad shape they had to cut her guns out last week, there's on Oberon rotting at a mooring 50km down the road and as a nation we can't even preserve one exaple of the longest serving ship classes we've ever had... All hail the USN for the wisest and bestest preservation police in the world... and I whish I was being sarcastic. You're more than damn lucky when you get to quibble about handing out CVN's. shane

It means that some preservation groups do a good job and some are bad but at least there's no one organization to screw up everything at once. Combined with a DoD that actually seems happy to transfer ships over to usually reputable groups and you have the wealth of naval history preserved that we do. It will be interesting to see if we can keep it up as the WWII generation passes, will the younger folk pick up the mantle? I will tip my hat to the Canadians and the HMCS Haida, we had a great visit there a few I&I's ago. I wonder how the Lancaster is doing.
Scott Cunningham Posted March 7, 2005 Posted March 7, 2005 Wish Aberdeen would do the same instead of letting its armor collection rust away like it did.
