Manic Moran Posted September 18, 2001 Posted September 18, 2001 Well, if people tell us when they're coming in, we may well be able to meet you at the airport and get you to the hotel. NTM

Manic Moran Posted September 19, 2001 Posted September 19, 2001 Well, if your flight details are the same as they were before you deleted them, I won't be able to meet you. However, directions aren't too hard... I'll get back to you. NTM
Colin Williams Posted September 19, 2001 Author Posted September 19, 2001 I just read that SF's Fleet Week has been cancelled for this year - http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?...19/MN238404.DTL We should look for some new activities on Saturday/Sunday. Perhaps a trip to the aircraft carrier Hornet in Alameda?
C.G.Erickson Posted September 19, 2001 Posted September 19, 2001 Thats a bummer Manic.....How about Hornet, and the Victory ship in Richmond? The Victory ship in Richmond is an incredible tour as they actually take you down into the engineering spaces.....Well worth it if your interested....
Guest Master Blaster Posted September 19, 2001 Posted September 19, 2001 Originally posted by Colin Williams:We should look for some new activities on Saturday/Sunday. Maybe we could go up to Berkley and heckle the anti war protestors.
Manic Moran Posted September 19, 2001 Posted September 19, 2001 I don't believe I'm familiar with the Victory ship. They let you down to engineering aboard Hornet... Apparently the generators are pretty much functional, there was half-serious talk about using her as a dockside power plant during the energy crisis. Well, there's also Jeremiah O' Brien (Liberty Ship) and Pampanito, a Gato class sub. Ferroequinologists can go visit the California state railroad museum at Sacramento, which I haven't been to yet... There's enough to keep you moderately busy, all in all. BTW, if anyone is planning on visiting Alcatraz, be advised that you have to book online several days in advance. I heard from one of my buddies in the Association of British Military Parachutists, as an aside. They're coming to Davis, CA next week to break the world record on HAHO jumps with a round 'chute. Not sure what else is in Davis though... NTM
Guest Master Blaster Posted September 20, 2001 Posted September 20, 2001 Looks like I have to cancel. Back on the road again to Antiguia & Ascencion. The perils of being one of the few Engineers with a passport.... Damm. I did so want to max out Geoff's Visa card too...
Skip Posted September 20, 2001 Posted September 20, 2001 The Victory ship is the Red Oak Victory. When I am healthy I am part of the engine room crew. I also would work with the electrical crew. The winch controls are very close to air conditioning control that I fix on older busses. If we want a tour we can start in the steering engine room and go thru the entire ship. For the peace lovers of you we have a five inch gun, two three inch guns, and eight twenty millimeter cannons. Not all were mounted when I was last there. Things are looking up so next week I plan to go up there for the first time in months. Skip
Jeff Posted September 21, 2001 Posted September 21, 2001 Well, my flight is still on so I'd better make room reservations. Does this place have a shuttle bus to/from the airport?
Colin Williams Posted September 21, 2001 Author Posted September 21, 2001 Originally posted by Jeff:Well, my flight is still on so I'd better make room reservations. Does this place have a shuttle bus to/from the airport? They have a free shuttle, and with the drop-off in travel they will probably be falling all over themselves to book you a room!
Jeff Posted September 24, 2001 Posted September 24, 2001 Well, they must be jonesing for business because I just made my room reservations and they only charged me $79. Or perhaps they just feel safer with us big strong TankNet guys around.
Rick Griest Posted September 25, 2001 Posted September 25, 2001 I'll be there with a 98 Camry to carry people so let me know who needs rides and when, from the airport etc. What is the procedure to find others at the hotel when we get there? Also, are there still activities planned for Thursday also? What were they? Rick
Jim Warford Posted September 25, 2001 Posted September 25, 2001 C.G.; could you post the specifics for meeting at Littlefield's on 10/5? Where and how do we meet? Could you also post detailed directions to the collection? Thanks.
Jeff Posted September 25, 2001 Posted September 25, 2001 The hotel has shuttle buses so you probably don't have to kill yourself being a taxi driver, but thanks for the offer. When I went to the 2nd I&I I called Geoff (I think) who told me to take a taxi from the airport, check-in and then go to a particular resaurant where everyone was having dinner. I'll be arriving about 4:30 on Wed. so I'll probably check-in and head for the bar. I hope they have enough beer this time!

Guest Sargent Posted September 25, 2001 Posted September 25, 2001 Originally posted by Jeff:I hope they have enough beer this time! Yes, it was embarrassing when we drank them dry, wasn't it?
Jim Warford Posted September 25, 2001 Posted September 25, 2001 C.G.; thanks for the info...I agree, I'll meet the group at the Ramada. What's our SP (time) to head for the museum? I won't be able to participate until Friday (nephew's wedding), but I'll be there on Friday with bells on.
Harold Jones Posted September 25, 2001 Posted September 25, 2001 So what's the plan for Saturday? I seem to remember Manic offered a BBQ at his place which should do for the afternoon evening. The Hornet is worth going to and isn't terribly far anything else of a nautical or military line to do in the area?
C.G.Erickson Posted September 26, 2001 Posted September 26, 2001 Originally posted by Jim Warford:C.G.; thanks for the info...I agree, I'll meet the group at the Ramada. Id say the time to depart Friday Morning would be O8:15.....this should allow for any unforseen things....like traffic jams......
Manic Moran Posted September 26, 2001 Posted September 26, 2001 Umm.. Traffic jams? On the Peninsula? Are you kidding me? (Actually, taking 380W to 280S mightn't be that bad...) NTM
Jason Posted September 26, 2001 Posted September 26, 2001 I'm afraid I'm not going to be coming. Maybe next year.
