Colin Williams Posted July 31, 2001 Posted July 31, 2001 Note - Original post edited to condense lodging info in one place. I FINALLY found a place for folks to stay... We have 12 rooms reserved at the Ramada Inn San Francisco Airport North, which is located at 245 South Airport Blvd, South San Francisco, CA. The number of rooms can be adjusted upward if necessary. The telephone number for reservations is 650-589-7200. I faxed off a signed contract this morning with the group name of TANKNET and a room rate of $89.00 per night for the nights of October 3rd through the 6th. The 6th is Saturday night so things are set up for a Sunday morning check-out, but I'm sure any of you can add an extra night if you wish. To get a guaranteed room and the above rate, you need to make your reservations within 30 days of August 1st. The Ramada is a decent motel with business support services, gift shop, hair salon(!!), restaurant, bar, swimming pool/spa, and health club (including tanning bed!). There are a number of restaurants within the SFO vicinity, and San Francisco is not that far away. A free shuttle bus can take you from SFO to the hotel. There are enough of us in the area to help out with folks who need to reach the hotel from the San Jose or Oakland airports. If you have any trouble with the Ramada, contact me or Greg Kinchen, the Sales Manager, who can be reached through the sales office at 650-873-3550. Don't be surprised if the operator answers "Holiday Inn". The same team manages both neighboring hotels. On the plus side the Ramada is cheap, close to the airport, close to the freeway and accessible for locals like C.G. (it's pretty much on his way to Littlefield's). So it's ideal for logistics. It also has a bar and a restaraunt. On the downside it is about 10 miles south of SF, creating some headaches for city activities. After an intense search I found a decent place in SF that came in at $115/night (+11% city hotel tax +5% energy consumption tax - thank you Gov. Davis). This seemed a little too expensive. All the other places suck, are too expensive, or are too expensive AND suck. Although close to Fleetweek activities, getting in and out of the city for the visits to Gabarino's and Littlefield's would be a pain, especially for those unfamiliar with SF streets. For a savings of about $30/night per person I think it's worth driving 10 miles to see the Navy. If there is a groundswell of well-heeled forumites wanting to be in town, we can still change. <font size=1>[Edited by Colin Williams (31 July 2001).] [Edited by Colin Williams (21 August 2001).]
Harold Jones Posted July 31, 2001 Posted July 31, 2001 The Ramada works for me. It has a bar and as a plus it should be close enough to the airport that the roar of planes taking off and landing will drown out Jim's snores.
Michael Eastes Posted July 31, 2001 Posted July 31, 2001 Sounds good-I assume we should make reservations soon? King,do you still want to share a room?
C.G.Erickson Posted July 31, 2001 Posted July 31, 2001 Good Job Colin......Sorry I gave up on you but I was gettin a mite worried...again my heartiest thanks and apologies......
Manic Moran Posted July 31, 2001 Posted July 31, 2001 Actually, SFO isn't that bad to get to the city from. I'd suggest taking CalTrain into town. NTM
Old Tanker Posted August 1, 2001 Posted August 1, 2001 I'm also looking for a room mate. Old fart, smokes don't snore too much ! how about car rental , yes-No ? Best without or what ?
Manic Moran Posted August 1, 2001 Posted August 1, 2001 Smokes? In California? Are you kidding? You'll be smoking outside the front door, I'll lay money. We'll probably have to rent something. I've a T-bird, and not a hell of a lot of passenger space in it. NTM
Jim Martin Posted August 1, 2001 Posted August 1, 2001 If you don't hold me so close this time, the snores won't be so loud in your ear, baby.... Colin Williams Posted August 1, 2001 Author Posted August 1, 2001 Details on 4th I&I lodgings - We have 12 rooms reserved at the Ramada Inn San Francisco Airport North, which is located at 245 South Airport Blvd, South San Francisco, CA. Colin Williams Posted August 1, 2001 Author Posted August 1, 2001 No problem. I was overoptimistic about the ease of finding the perfect motel and wasted a lot of time visiting inappropriate places. Until the Ramada came through I was worried enough about finding a good place that I figured it would be better to wait until I had something in hand than get into an argument over whether I was following through on my commitment. Jim Martin Posted August 6, 2001 Posted August 6, 2001 Well, barring a miracle, I will now be unable to attend the I&I. After being told repeatedly by various parties that my position was secure...I was laid off today. Resume has been updated, and Harold is providing a service in reviewing it. As soon as tweaking is complete, it's going up on Monster.com. I'm being provided with 3 months worth of outsourcing service by my former company--of course, I only have 7 weeks of severance to work with. Given the tight job market, well...I may not be staying in Denver much longer. It will cost over a grand to break my lease, and a job at Starbuck's will not pay the rent on this place. If I haven't at least gotten some strong bites in a month's time...it's time to break the lease and head back to the folks' place in Springfield MO, to continue my job search without having to pay rent (save in the form of manual labor on their farm)... A friend in the Foreign Service has recommended I apply for jobs with the State Dept. They're apparently hiring IT professionals to work overseas at embassies and consulates. I may just fill out their form. Keep you posted.
Old Tanker Posted August 15, 2001 Posted August 15, 2001 BTT It's time to book ! What is on the agenda for Sunday , I need a general idea of when to fly out !
Manic Moran Posted August 15, 2001 Posted August 15, 2001 Sunday? Drink? Watch the aishow? Look at ships? Go to Alcatraz? There'll be enough to keep you busy a while.. NTM
Harold Jones Posted August 15, 2001 Posted August 15, 2001 I've booked my room for wednesday through sunday. Due to circumstances beyond my control I seem to have an opening for a roomy. If anybody's interested let me know.
Jim Warford Posted August 16, 2001 Posted August 16, 2001 Guys; can somebody please update the list of who's attending? I want to make sure I'm on the list. Thanks.
Geoff Winnington-Ball Posted August 16, 2001 Posted August 16, 2001 Jim, I'll update the list as I have it and post it here... people can add or withdraw their names as applicable. Geoff
Jeff Posted August 16, 2001 Posted August 16, 2001 What's the darn web page again? I forgot to bookmark it. Originally posted by Jim Warford:Guys; can somebody please update the list of who's attending? I want to make sure I'm on the list. Thanks.
Colin Williams Posted August 17, 2001 Author Posted August 17, 2001 Sunday (and even part of Saturday) could be a good day for this - http://www.military.com/Content/MoreConten...etweek_sf_ships
Old Tanker Posted August 17, 2001 Posted August 17, 2001 Try again !What time are you East Coast and Mid-West guys flying out, since I will probably rent a car and probably have a few riders I would like a general idea . Three ? four ? five ? Earlier ?
Jason Posted August 20, 2001 Posted August 20, 2001 Guys, I have a slight problem. My GF got me some free airline tickets with Southwest Airlines, the catch is I have to fly into Oakland, not San Jose like I previously thought. I have NO idea how far SF airport is from Oakland. Not only that, but, needless to say, I was hoping to not have to rent a car (budget is a little tight, tuition to pay for the coming semester). Does anyone have any ideas? If I fly in on Wednesday afternoon, is there a chance I may be able to get a ride from one of you generous folks? Additionally, anyone interested in sharing a room?

Harold Jones Posted August 20, 2001 Posted August 20, 2001 Originally posted by Jason:...Additionally, anyone interested in sharing a room? Sure, bring earplugs as the sound of planes taking off at SFO may not drown out the snoring. I already have a double room booked.
Jason Posted August 21, 2001 Posted August 21, 2001 Thanks Harold, I appreciate your offer. Email me and give me the financial details for the room. I'll cut you a check or have you a money order when I arrive. OK, looks like I'm set. I've got a ride from Oakland (Many thanks C.G.) and a room-mate. Woohoo! I'm going to finalize flights this week or weekend.
