Stefan Fredriksson Posted June 13, 2001 Posted June 13, 2001 Thanks for the offer Nicholas! The +2000$ budget comes not only from air-fares and stay.If I am to go to the US, I would try to do a bit more. So included are also trips/visits to:- Texas- Disneyworld- Grand Canyon- Florida?- etc
Stefan Fredriksson Posted June 13, 2001 Posted June 13, 2001 Greece-trip is to Tolon. A couple of hours away from Athens. Jeanette likes lying on the beach, while I have nothing against seeing some culture, museums, historical places and such.So hopefully there will be something for the both of us.
Manic Moran Posted June 13, 2001 Posted June 13, 2001 Here's a tip I learned about visiting the US early on. Don't try to see all of it at once, work on little corners at a time. You can probably do Disneyworld, SF, and the Grand Canyon on the same trip, for example. Texas and Florida, I'd save for the next year! NTM
Stefan Fredriksson Posted June 14, 2001 Posted June 14, 2001 I've slept on your advice. Checked airline fares today, for a week's stay in SF. There are tickets for about +500$ (ordinary price). If something happens I will let you know.
Geoff Winnington-Ball Posted June 14, 2001 Author Posted June 14, 2001 Stefan, don't chicken out now! Oh yeah, and bring Aquavit...
Manic Moran Posted June 14, 2001 Posted June 14, 2001 Oh God, Aquavit.. The hangover I ended up with when I woke up the next morning. Next to someone I don't think I should have woken up next to. (I went to a Scandanavian Christmas party... ) Seriously, Stefan. Checking out Disneyworld when based from SF is probably not a realistic proposition. It's akin to a 6-hour drive. (Take an overnight train, perhaps?) Or is it Disneyland in California? SF itself has easily plenty to keep you touristing for a week, if you shell out for transport. An example might be the wine country, the redwood forests, Alcatraz, whatever. We'd like you to come, but the more you plan on doing, the more expensive it's going to get. Especially as America is a big place. That said, you're talking only $500. I spent some $700 in two days without batting an eyelid. (Fish tank, airbrush compressor, and some Ikea furniture). Considering what you're getting for your $500, I'd say it's well worth it! NTM
Stefan Fredriksson Posted June 15, 2001 Posted June 15, 2001 Aha, there is a Disney-thingy in CA aswell. The reasoning I had from start was that, if I was going to the US, I might aswell try to do as much as possible. Over a 2-3 week trip. But right now a 1-week seems more plausible. I guess it will not be written in stone until sometime in August, whether I'll be able to attend or not. And of course, Aquavit will be in the luggage. The good stuff, not the spiced one.

Yes, Stefan, DO bring it... just so we can drink toasts over MB's prostrate, unconscious body...
C.G.Erickson Posted June 17, 2001 Posted June 17, 2001 If any of youse guys are interested....last Month the Tuskeegee Airmen had their Banquet in my hometown...This weekend was the Travis Air Force Base Airshow which drew in over 250,000 people, In which there was a WW2 Military parade with Mr. Littlefield and Joe Fazio sending vehicles...Fazio sending the SPR Tiger and the rest of his German Reenactors to set up a German Encampment. June 30th is the Warbirds club in town with the Planes from the movie Pearl Harbor...(The Newspaper said "The Majority of the Planes from the Movie"....)
C.G.Erickson Posted June 17, 2001 Posted June 17, 2001 P.S....watched 2 B-17s and 1 B-24 buzz the refinery I am working in for 2 weeks.......
Geoff Winnington-Ball Posted June 17, 2001 Author Posted June 17, 2001 Originally posted by C.G.Erickson:P.S....watched ...[a] B-24 buzz the refinery I am working in for 2 weeks....... Ooooh... Ploesti... never seen a B-24 in the air, what was it like? Ever read the Duggan/Stewart book? Or COMBAT CAMERAMAN? Yikes...
C.G.Erickson Posted June 17, 2001 Posted June 17, 2001 G.W.B....Watching the "Bombers" fly over at 150 feet sent a chill down my spine....I could clearly see the Belly Turrets with their twin 50s and I swear I could count rivets...A resonant bass crescendo emanated from each bomber and the sound echoed around the towers of the Refinery....I glanced around, (fantasizing) Wondering what it must have felt like scurrying for cover...realizing it was too late...There is no cover in a Refinery..... The most amazing thing was watching the B-24 "Race" a B-17 out to the Mothball Fleet and fly over the Iowa....The B-24 easily outpaced the 17......To the Fallen!!!!

Sounds like one of the refineries in Richmond, Yes?

C.G.Erickson Posted June 19, 2001 Posted June 19, 2001 MB...theres alot you dont know about Calif... Try Concord....The Hornet is open to tours and was even featured in the Fox Family Show..."The Worlds Scariest Places" supposed to be haunted...
Guest Master Blaster Posted June 19, 2001 Posted June 19, 2001 Originally posted by C.G.Erickson:MB...theres alot you dont know about Calif... Try Concord.... So your saying that The moniker "Peoples Republic of Kalifornia" is undeserved??? Your loyalty is commendable comrade....
C.G.Erickson Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 Maybe Comrade at Arms ...Cal Berkley repealed Affirmative Action as a way to enroll...about the bombers...they were supposed to alter their takeoffs and landings to avoid flying below the 500 foot minimum over the Refinery...Once in awhile they did, but most of the time was "Direct" takeoff and landing approaches which had them barely skimming the 150 foot exhaust towers...NO ONE COMPLAINED....Youd be surprised at the number of Gun Ranges I know of, the number of Duck hunting "Preserves",(Where I do a little "Varminting"), The number of Hunting clubs...etc....etc....But then again...I avoid the Gay Bay and LALA land exclusively...laughing at them city folk...Oh...that refinery in Richmond?...Its Chevron...They have their own pistol and skeet range.......
Guest Master Blaster Posted June 21, 2001 Posted June 21, 2001 C.G.:My ex is from Richmond, and her Dad used to work there.
C.G.Erickson Posted June 29, 2001 Posted June 29, 2001 I dont know why Northern California has become Bomber Central, but another B-24 has flown into McClellan AFB...and a B-25 has flown into my cities local Airport....A B-29 will arrive if it can fix its engine problems......

C.G.Erickson Posted June 29, 2001 Posted June 29, 2001 Oh..... other news...Finally got in touch with Joe Garbarino and confirmed a tour date for the Fourth....So Oct. 4th in the morning, will travel to San Rafael to view Garbarinos very nice collection, then a lunch stop, and then down to Hayward to view Joe Fazios German equipment....Oh GWB...I cant resist, This weekend there are 2 B-17s, 2 B-24s,1 B-25, 3 P-51s, 1 Hawker Fury, A bunch of WW2 American Trainers (Texans?) Hopefully a B-29,and hopefully the Japanese planes from the Movie Pearl Harbor...all within 35 miles of my house....
C.G.Erickson Posted June 30, 2001 Posted June 30, 2001 Did I mention the C-47 that actually towed gliders on D-Day, the 2 BT-13 Biplane trainers, the Chinese Nanchang WW2 trainer, Plus what looks like a prewar Bomber...split tail, Fat as a pig, dual engines, Internal Bomb Bay...not the B-25...Its in Navy Markings....The rest of the Planes will fly in tomorrow...
