Jim Martin Posted May 22, 2001 Posted May 22, 2001 Actually, the two old guys to whom Geoff refers are my Dad and an old AF bud of his who lives in CA. Unfortunately, Dad is a bit puritanical about alcohol consumption (Granddad was apparently an abusive alcoholic before he dried out), and Dad pretty much quit drinking back during the war. But he's a decent old coot despite that--you guys just have to be well-behaved drunks...

Jim Martin Posted May 23, 2001 Posted May 23, 2001 Well, looks like Dad & friend will not be attending after all...Mom isn't thrilled with the idea of San Fran, the Davis' (his friends) will be tied up that weekend, and he doesn't want to go without Mom anyhow...
Stefan Fredriksson Posted May 24, 2001 Posted May 24, 2001 Guys, I'm having thoughts about actually going to this event. But not only, if I go I will also try to see other things, such as Grand Canyon and Disneyland and others I could name. What I need to know - what is the wheather like in SF in October? Disclaimer - vacation and money will be the final decider. But I'd really like to attend.

Stefan, It might rain (probably about 20% chance). It might be a little foggy up in the city (not common in the fall). In all likelihood the weather will be sunny with highs in the 70s (Fahrenheit). Last year during Fleet Week my son and I were walking around in T-shirts and eating ice cream. (Warning - Not-so-subtle nationalist comment follows.)Either way, the worst SF October weather is probably better than the best October Stockholm ever saw. Colin
Geoff Winnington-Ball Posted May 24, 2001 Author Posted May 24, 2001 Originally posted by Stefan Fredriksson:Guys, I'm having thoughts about actually going to this event... I hope you can make it, Stefan! It would be nice to see you again. Just bring lots of Aquavit so we can laugh at Tom and MB grovelling on the floor!
M1Buck Posted May 29, 2001 Posted May 29, 2001 There is something to be said for the guys that party too hard-I don't know exactly, but when I think of it, I'll let you all know! My wife and kids are probably going to be coming to this event so I'll have to be alittle more controlled than the last one. MB, I look forward to meeting you. Did you ever get that book I sent you? Was it the one you wanted? Richard, Is your wife coming, too? My wife was asking!
M1Buck Posted May 29, 2001 Posted May 29, 2001 Although Ray is no longer the MFIC, does he still stay current or do people stay in touch? Does he know about SF in OCT? It just wouldn't feel right without brother Ray showing up for a beer or two....unerstan?
Jason Posted May 29, 2001 Posted May 29, 2001 How many folks have a significant other coming? My girlfriend was wondering. If there was a number of women who were going to be present, she is considering coming along. Probabaly to make sure I don't do anything stupid if I get drunk.
M1Buck Posted May 29, 2001 Posted May 29, 2001 At the 2nd I and I, Richard brought his wife and I brought mine.At the 3rd, Richard brought his wife, mine was at home with our 2 month old. This year, I will probably bring my wife.
Guest Master Blaster Posted May 30, 2001 Posted May 30, 2001 Buck,Don't know yet....I go wheels up in about 6 hrs and will be home tommrrow. If it's the one I remember, it used to be GD and then the NETT team took it over. I think the wife is comming. Jason: getting drunk with this bunch falls in the "high risk" catagory by default. Especially with "Ye olde fossilized one"...
Geoff Winnington-Ball Posted June 5, 2001 Author Posted June 5, 2001 Then you're obviously not trying hard enough... I can offer some advice, but email me offline...
Richard Lindquist Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 Originally posted by M1Buck:Richard, Is your wife coming, too? My wife was asking! Not sure, Tom. I think I could use a little vacation time. I probably won't know till a month before if she will insist on coming.
Richard Lindquist Posted June 5, 2001 Posted June 5, 2001 Originally posted by Master Blaster:Jason: getting drunk with this bunch falls in the "high risk" catagory by default. The trick is to get the bar to imprint his Visa card just before he goes to sleep. Now Tom and his projectile vomiting are another case, that you have to watch out for.
Geoff Winnington-Ball Posted June 5, 2001 Author Posted June 5, 2001 YOFO?? Isn't that the pot calling the kettle black?
Stefan Fredriksson Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 Just spoke to my auto-repairman... that bill will totally exclude a trip to America this year
Guest Master Blaster Posted June 6, 2001 Posted June 6, 2001 Originally posted by Stefan Fredriksson:Just spoke to my auto-repairman... that bill will totally exclude a trip to America this year Obviously, you need to reexamine your priorites.....
M1Buck Posted June 7, 2001 Posted June 7, 2001 I still don't know if my wife will be coming, but I would like her to, if only to get her away from work for a couple of days. My kids haven't been to the west coast, either. For those how haven't been to one of these events, I can tell you it is ALOT of fun and very educational. Probably the best aspect of this is meeting the people that make this forum grate! As I said in a previous post, I only wish that Brother Ray, knows about this and can stop by for a beer or two.
Michael Eastes Posted June 7, 2001 Posted June 7, 2001 I've actually been granted the time off,new job,and all! I will be there, barring Act of God. (Or maybe YOFO,who sounds a little too Lovecraftian to be taken lightly.) My wife may come, too. San Francisco is an old stomping ground, from her "hippie" days, and she hasn't been there in a good long while.(She lived a couple of doors down from the Grateful Dead, who kept everyone up every night with their practicing.) Also, the pictures of that private armour collection have her fascinated, believe it or not.
Geoff Winnington-Ball Posted June 7, 2001 Author Posted June 7, 2001 MICHAEL: You may attend, and bring your wife. No harm will come to thee or thine... M1BUCK: I'm sure Brother Ray will attend on his own, unannounced, if he is in this hemisphere. Or else he's in deep shit... MB TO STEFAN: We've heard excuses in our time, but never this pathetic. YOFO KNOWS ALL...
C.G.Erickson Posted June 8, 2001 Posted June 8, 2001 Theres also a Minature Outdoor Railroad, with Incredible 1/10th scale Steam Locomotives...which go around a pond with a little Village and Bridge....Also there are horses..Jacques Place is "The Pony Ranch"..Although the horses are basically for his daughters...Jacques cant stand "Those Big Biting Hairy animals..." Jacques receives something "NEW" every 3 weeks...He is going to open up an Artillery Wing in his Museum..With plans to build another complete Museum opposite from his exsisting building...He is currently searching for items on his "Wish" list....T-80, T-90...Tiger...Panther
Manic Moran Posted June 12, 2001 Posted June 12, 2001 Good news.. just got my unit schedule. National Guard commitments will not prohibit my attending. Unless there's a call-up or something, of course. With luck, I'll have my hair back too. NTM
Stefan Fredriksson Posted June 13, 2001 Posted June 13, 2001 I know my excuse sounds pathetic, but: - Auto-repairs +800$- New bicycle with features ~500$- Greece-trip with Jeanette (expenses included) ~1000$- New garden furniture ~350$- You get the picture, a +2000$ trip to the US is sort of out of the question this year. I am not poor, but I am not stinking rich either. "YOFO" sounds intimidating, meaning... what?
Manic Moran Posted June 13, 2001 Posted June 13, 2001 How do you get $2,000 out of that? I can put you up in my house, drive you around... heck, maybe we'll all chip in and even feed you! The 'plane ticket isn't -that- expensive. (P.S., it may sound a little pathetic, but try 'priceline.com', I've gotten airline tickets quarter-price there. Don't worry about if it says your bid has a snowball's chance of succeeding, just keep trying and raising by a little each time! The only problem is that you can't pick out the time of day you fly.) To be said though, a Greece trip isn't too bad an idea. Which end are you heading for? NTM
