What's the counterproposal, an arrow (who still uses them?) pointing into a cylinder (because early day harddisks (lol) used to be manufactured in tall cylindrical stacks)?

A tape symbol?

Information storage is an abstract concept. It's not easy to condense that into a 64x64 pixel array. The hieroglyph for water eventually mutated into the letter W. We're still using arrows to indicate directions and vectors. The Floppy icon is useful because it's easily recognizable as pure line art, it's being used everywhere for decades now, and therefore recognized by most, and easily learned by the rest.

Obviously it should be a Punch Card.

Men too, but... apparently not always for either gender or maybe it depends on the meds (or what you mix them with :D ).
