I've had fewer razor rash problems and I'm not throwing away a £5 over-complicated piece of unrecyclable plastic and steel every time I shave, too. To think that there are devices for resharpening safety razor blades and idiots think times are hard now. Also, why do American (youtubers) seem to call boxcutter blades "razor" blades. I've never seen anyone trying to shave with one. (Over here they've been traditionally called "Stanley Knife blades" for decades.)

Apply basic laziness and hey presto, "razors." Rigor (or rigour) and precision in expression is, after all, demonstrated mostly by its absence these days. Soren
sunday Posted May 1, 2024 Posted May 1, 2024 (edited) I have read the term "utility knife" to refer to knives using those replaceable trapezoidal blades. I've found that coconut oil, of the cooking kind, applied some minutes before shaving, prior to application of shaving foam pretty much eliminates razor rash, even using a disposable razor for the the tenth or twentieth time. Tim Sielbeck Posted May 1, 2024 Posted May 1, 2024 Box cutter is the term I hear most but I have seen box cutters that either used a safety razor or a modification of a safety razor that had only one edge on it.

OTOH, since I have picked leatherworking as (another...) hobby I have started to sharpen boxcutter blades, since sharp blade makes all the difference when cutting some kinds of leather. You could definitely shave with those.

Works with any kind of oil, back when I had to shave daily I have used medical grade paraffin oil (aka hypoallergenic baby oil). No odor, no irritation.
Rick Posted May 1, 2024 Posted May 1, 2024 Speaking of oil, used motor oil is good for brushing on wood to prohibit rot and carpenter bees. Let it soak for at least a week under cover and I apply two coats.

There was some historical research on the origins of the Black Legend, that blight on Spain reputation, that traces them to Italy.
