It is also known more technically as the Octothorp, and in some scripting/programming languages as a comment marker or a compiler directive.

 

I don't see the '#' as "pound" regularly, but I do recognize it as one of the terms used for it more regularly in the years before it became #HASHTAG, so the appeal of the joke.
