Jaroslav Posted June 16, 2025 Author Posted June 16, 2025 6th Fleet battle group in Egypt The Coral Sea, head of a 12-ship battle group and carrier of some 75 aircraft -- F/A-18 fighters and A-6 ground-support attack jets - represented the closest U.S. military force to Lebanon as it remained in port at Alexandria, Egypt. A Navy spokesman said in addition, though, two amphibious assault ships and a tank landing ship carrying a total of 2,400 Marines were in the Mediterranean Sea. The spokesman identified the assault ships as the USS Nassau and the USS Shreveport and the tank landing ship as the USS Barnstable County. Among the Coral Sea's battle group are the guided missile cruisers USS San Jacinto and USS Thomas S. Gates, the nuclear-powered guided missile cruisers USS Mississippi and USS Virginia, the guided missile destroyer USS John King, the frigates USS Ainsworth, USS Aylwin, USS Kauffman and USS Klakring, the oiler USS Monongahela and the ammunition ship USS Butte. The battleship USS Iowa also was in the Mediterranean but on the other side of the sea, in port at Marseilles, France, the Navy spokesman said. A Navy moratorium remained in effect on the firing of the Iowa's huge 16-inch guns since a gun turret explosion killed 47 sailors last spring. The Navy has failed to determine a cause for the fatal blast. https://www.upi.com/Archives/1989/07/31/6th-Fleet-battle-group-in-Egypt/3068001688878/ Interesting data on 6th fleet composition. Article is from July 31, 1989.
