BLAINE, Minn. (AP) — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz says former state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were killed in a politically motivated assassination, and a second lawmaker and his wife were shot and wounded. Authorities were actively searching for a suspect hours after the targeted killings.

“We must all, in Minnesota and across the country, stand against all forms of political violence,” Walz said at a press conference Saturday. “Those responsible for this will be held accountable.”

The wounded lawmaker was identified as state Sen. John Hoffman, a Democrat, was first elected in 2012. He previously served as vice chair of the Anoka Hennepin School Board, which manages the largest school district in Minnesota.

Hoffman is married and has one daughter. Hortman was the top House Democratic leader in the state Legislature and a former House speaker. She was first elected in 2004.

Drew Evans, superintendent of the Bureau of Criminal Apprehension, said that authorities were actively searching for a suspect.

Autopsies will be done to determine extent of injuries, but Hortman and her spouse died from gunshot wounds, Evans said. A “shelter in place” order was in effect early Saturday.

Public Safety Commissioner Bob Jacobson said the suspect was posing as a law enforcement officer.

“Suspect exploited the trust of our uniforms, what our uniforms are meant to represent. That betrayal is deeply disturbing to those of us who wear the badge with honor and responsibility,” he said.

Police Chief Mark Bruley said the suspect fled out of the back of Hortman’s house after an exchange of gunfire with police.

The suspect was dressed like a uniformed officer and operating a vehicle that “looked exactly like an SUV squad car. It was equipped with lights, emergency lights and looked exactly like a police vehicle,” Bruley said.

The FBI has joined in the investigation, according to a statement posted by Dan Bonginio, the agency’s deputy director.

Minnesota House Speaker Lisa Demuth, a Republican from Cold Spring, called the attack “evil” and said she was “heartbroken beyond words” by the killings of Hortman and her husband, Mark.

“With the law enforcement response ongoing and details still emerging, I will simply ask all Minnesotans to please lift up in prayer the victims of this horrific attack, as well as the law enforcement personnel still working to apprehend the perpetrator,” Demuth said in a statement.

The shootings happened at a time when political leaders nationwide have been attacked, harassed and intimidated during a time of deep political divisions.

GIFFORDS, the national gun violence prevention organization led by former U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, released the following statement.

“My family and I know the horror of a targeted shooting all too well,” Giffords said. “An attack against lawmakers is an attack on American democracy itself. Leaders must speak out and condemn the fomenting violent extremism that threatens everything this country stands for.”

Giffords was shot in the head in 2011 by a gunman who killed six people and injured 12 others. She stepped down from Congress in January 2012 to focus on her recovery

My understanding is Hortman just voted with Republicans to repeal benefits for illegals in Minnesota

Democrat murders other democrats.  That should be the headline.  A tragedy, violence is not what should be happening, prayers for the victims, and eternal d@mnation to the killer.

if you do a youtube search under civil war in the uk you see all kinds of content appear in the feed

now i do not predict one way or the other per se

but is a symptom of something going on where this sort of content appears at all

because there is some perception

which is a symptom of it

even if a minority view it is significant enough that enough people watch this sort of content and start forming their views around that because it is there

you watch in the way literally governments in the west which claim to be so humanist

behaving in these ways which do not jive with the self image of the societies

the government gaslight you

the media gaslights you

and then every so often it is a pressure cooker during a hot summer month because of tension building up

Nothing in that pic indicates the suspect was a D.  Pro job showing off those old detective skills, Murph... 🙄

The NY Post, a few hours ago, had the following (that will greatly disappoint some of you):

Quote

The apparent hit list included abortion providers, clinics and Planned Parenthood, sources told The Post, theorizing the suspect may have been harboring pro-life views. Both of the Democrats he targeted were pro-choice.

Despite being a Democratic appointee, Boelter last registered to vote in 2022, as a Republican.

A purported roommate is saying the suspect was a Trump voter, but so many hinkey things about this story to date;

Shooter's wife connected to Walz administration. That said, something is so bizarre about this case that, as the above video says, its not going to be explained by partisan politics. There's something else going on, mental health crisis plus something else.

Given the Wix website that Praetorian security company had, I wouldn't be surprised if these people are embezzling or doing some tax fraud or something.  S/F....Ken M

Yeah, something weird about the founder of a security company living in a house with apparently numerous roommates in a lower-income metro area.

Cult, perhaps?

They are refusing to release the manifesto, which means it is bad for the Democrats.  SOP if they release it hurts Republicans, if they refuse to release it would hurt Democraps.

Hopefully some brave cops will do the right thing and leak it like they did the troon school shooter in Nashville.

Its one thing to antagonize LAPD, its quite another to get froggy with LASD.

A tactical detail; still using OC/CS on organized crowds. In 2025, that seems dumb. The miscreants that need to be controlled are prepared for that already.
