Power went down Monday afternoon in vast areas of Spain, crossing over into Portugal and France causing widespread outages in homes and businesses and bringing transportation infrastructure to a halt. The cause of the outage is currently unknown. Lisbon, Madrid, Seville, Barcelona, and Valencia are reportedly affected. The outage began at around 12:30PM CET.

I'm not seeing credible English-language reports other than on X.

Russians? Aliens? Illuminati?

LOL I read this as Euro OUTRAGE, not Outage!   And my first thought was what are they outraged about today?

That you guys like maple syrup on Bacon.

Im not finding anything about an outage in the Netherlands, and despite there being claims on some news reports of it being in the UK and Belgium, there is no reports I can find  of that either. Basically its been overhyped.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2025_European_power_outage

At 15:03 GMT, Portuguese grid operator REN said the outage was due to "temperature variations in Spain" causing a rare atmospheric phenomenon. This induced oscillations in high voltage power lines and disrupted synchronisation between systems, advising it could take up to a week for the network to return to normal.[4]

I'm visiting family in Guipuzcoa, near the French border.  We lost power for an hour at around 12:30.  I guess we are the lucky ones.

Not to worry, there will be a steam locomotive  along shortly.

I knew it! Sabotage! Some clog-wearing Luddite, no doubt.

Who needs high speed, smooth electric trains? Steam was barely tried.

Turns out they have been getting old diesel locos out, so I guess Sunday will be happy.

I wonder how long will it take to blame Russians (and Putin personally) for that.

But, jokes aside, it is terrible situation for locals, especially in places with lots of migrants. Within few hours, this guys would discover CCTVs, security systems and alarms, phoines etc. are not working, police would not arrive and this "lazy white colonisers" are now legitimate prey....

At last, Internet is back.

We got power back at 23:30 local time. It is now 0:47.

I have been without power, internet, cell data, or TV from 12:33 to 23:30. Seeing there was no cell service after the outgage really freaked me, especiall y after rumors of France also suffering from loss of power, which is a very concerning prospect. That notion of SHTF loved by preppers was in mind, so I began to store some tap water for future cleaning and washing needs. Fortunately we had at hand enough charged batteries to operate devices.

Other places got their power restored sooner. Main source of information has been traditional battery powered radio receivers. I still have not checked news on the web.

According to our dear Prime Minister, the cause of the outgage was a sudden disappearance of 15GW of generation during 5 seconds at 13:33 local time. I think the possible causes are not purely electrical, as that is really unplausible, but some kind of software bug in some control system used in several generating plants, a bad configuration of automatic controllers, or some hostile action by hackers, with or without nation state support.

@Markus Becker has tried to contact me several times, many thanks!

It's frightening how quickly our society would fall apart with an extended absence of electrical power. Most people would die.

There have been no reports of looting, thanks God. Police was in force out in the streets, in groups of five, at least.

After loss of water pressure, you'll find that liquid dish soap is worth its weight in gold. Personal hygiene and cooking wash-up can be done with far less water if you're using liquid soap.

Also, an empty 5 gallon paint bucket and a roll of trash bags solves the nonworking toilet issue.

Most of those little auto jump-starters have a round 12VDC receptacle and a couple of USB-A ports. They're quite handy.

To save batteries, Its not a bad idea to have an index card with known-good station freqs. Hard to Google stuff when there's no Google!

We had a 10-day power outage during the Icepocalypse of 2021. I didn't lose power for long but know several people who did. No looting, but a few burglaries in nicer neighborhoods.

The main problem in my burg was what the authorities called "unattended deaths" which means elderly people died of exposure in their homes. The local PD and FD were completely inert. Their primary response to the crisis was tag-n-bag after the roads cleared. Yeah, they offered the civic center as a "warming center" but only from 0800 to 1700, and a lot of those older folks either didn't drive or didn't have a vehicle that could run safely on ice.

Be prepared to "Camp In Place." Water, at least two ways to cook, batteries, radio, etc. Candles are great but you better have ways to put out fires.

My brother and his family lived through that. They toughed it out a few days using the fireplace for heat, but with the little kids, they just could not keep them warm enough so they hit the road in search of somewhere with power. They got about a half hour away when their landlord called and invited them to come stay with them. The landlord still had power. The landlord took my brother's family in and fed them for the duration of that event. It was no small gesture as my brother at the time had four young children. There is almost no way that would happen back where we are from, Texas is a different place.

Well, fiber Internet went out just after my last post, so I am posting now using the cell phone as an access point.

I only wanted to say that emergency phone numbers were active during the event, so there were less opportunities for would be looters to think about not so good things.
