Yesterday was the anniversary of General Patton's phone call to his staff after the meeting with Eisenhower at Verdun. Today marks the movement of the Third Army towards the relief of Bastogne.  I think it is fair to say the Third Army and its staff were far ahead of First Army 80 years ago this week in preparation.

I don't want to miss a chance to bash Hodges and Bradley so please spare a moment to savor Patton's eloquence: "play ball".

thinking of this timeframe the last minutes of the episode of Band of Brothers where they are headed into town was very well done.  They don't really do TV like that very often...

The full episodes of the Battle of the Bulge part of the series made my living room feel cold.

I have to ask, why hasn't anyone remade the battle of the bulge film? They could hardly do a worse job, even if it had Ben Affleck in it.

Agreed on bad of brothers.it dovetailed quite nicely with the movie Battleground.

with Band of Brothers I'm not sure there is a need for Battle of the Bulge to be re-made.  The scenes surrounding Battle of the Bulge in the movie Patton are entirely satisfactory as well.

Panzerlied could have been done better, however...

The Bulge should be redone as a long miniseries with all sides represented ( like the longest day). So too should market garden and Normandy

I'm not certain that Elsenborn was more important but it was certainly very important and the infantry/artillery co-ordination was very good there.  It does always seem that the "critical defensive position" is always undermanned.  If there's a critical road junction or a fantastic field of fire that must be defended then it's just possible that more troops should be assigned to defend that spot.  It's unfortunate that the Allies had convinced themselves that the war was nearly over and so may senior officers weren't paying attention but some were.

In the final analysis the German attack was decisively defeated and therefore shortened Germany's ability to continue the fighting.  They were always going to lose, the only questions were when, and how costly it would be.
