PaulFormerlyinSaudi Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 I may not have been paying attention. It seems to me that this came out of the blue. Go ahead ELI5. Why the heck does Trump/Musk want to shut down the government?
NickM Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Oh noes! Uncle Sugar ain't around to take of me? What will I do?
Steven P Allen Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Go ahead: shut it down. It will do far less damage than being open for business.

Murph Posted December 19, 2024 Posted December 19, 2024 Shut it down. Shut it down until Jan 20th, and then DOGE it.
PaulFormerlyinSaudi Posted December 19, 2024 Author Posted December 19, 2024 (edited) I have seen reports President Trump and Elon Musk want Congress to pass an increase in in the borrowing limit now to avoid having to do it during their term. Edited December 19, 2024 by PaulFormerlyinSaudi

Why isn’t there a proper budget bill? Who is president?

They have had their chance for the last four years. Why have they not done it, especially when the libtards were in charge?
DKTanker Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 (edited) The government shuts down every Friday for the weekend, every national holiday (many of which become three day weekends) and nobody gives it a second thought. The threat of a government shutdown has become a canard big government types like to toss out as a fear mongering weapon. The people aren't buying it any longer, it has the same ring of truth to it that [ insert Republican name ] is a Nazi. Edited December 20, 2024 by DKTanker
Ivanhoe Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 There's an amusing thing going around, that the NIST web servers will go offline. Its been pointed out that most US governmental web servers are paid for, the content is paid for, the electricity will still flow (the government must honor existing federal contracts with the cash on hand). Shutting servers down is simply being spiteful.
seahawk Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Is that not only the federal budget? Who would miss the FBI enforcing libtard opinions or the DEA going after innocent gun owners? Even if the Border Patrol stops, who would notice when the borders are not protected and illegals streaming into the USA are not shot?

The most quoted theory is that shutdowns have happened so much on the Republicans watch, they want it to occur on the Democrats watch so the mud is spread more evenly. Go figure.

Stuart Galbraith Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 As I say, its the most quoted theory in the media, I find it far from convincing.. IMHO Musk just wanted to throw his weight about.
Ivanhoe Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Going around FB. At least partially true. One would have to be a certifiable idiot to think a sneaky $70k per annum raise for Congresscritters would go unnoticed. Shielding Congressional comms from subpoenas is pretty much admitting that the more powerful Congresscritters are committing felonies.

rmgill Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 Aww. Who's a sad panda that the people can be moved to notice what you're doing. https://x.com/ericldaugh/status/1869881655931941197?fbclid=IwY2xjawHSd2BleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHV8r5SThyBQ1tLH0tm-1UgcY7D805WOCer-1Z3z5YNp59rd2YF4z1CvSmw_aem_XLPRpWE3l4j02f4jmw_sig

Whilst undoubtedly true, it wasnt clickbait that convinced me that Musk is a dickhead that likes throwing his weight around. I think that realisation came when he was selling 'Not a flamethrower.'
rmgill Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 (edited) Wait, you mean the guy who's dating super models and running 3 successful companies might be a bit of a dick over wasteful pork spending? (ie on the disagreeable spectrum) Part of the problem BOTH of our countries have (but the UK has it arguably worse) is that folks think that sinecures as jobs is a good thing. Why don't you go look at the space company (Axiom) that was headed by a former NASA administrator and see how they're doing. He staffed up 800 employees when they don't actually do the construction, that's outsourced. Needless to say, they're having money problems and can't pay the prim sub contractor. Why don't you mind your wanna be Trudeau PM and your own nation's spending? Edited December 20, 2024 by rmgill
Murph Posted December 20, 2024 Posted December 20, 2024 I think Musk is a great man, and am glad he is on our side. Shut the government down till the 20th, nothing will be lost. Nothing. Then fire 2/3rds of all government workers.
