I think the The Paralympic Games and Special Olympics occur after this. I don't know if they're televised but  seem to encompass the spirit of the games, and humanity, better than the traditional Olympics.

That's likely because there's no money to be made from those games.

Heard on the radio yesterday break-dancing is now an Olympic sport 🚾

...aand it's gone. It won't be back for Los Angeles game. In the past, there were 'demonstration sports' but nowadays there are 'optional sports' where real Olympic medals are given, but only for those Olympics. Apparently for LA, baseball and softball are back

Breaking seems to be one of the less successful new entrants: I mean, many participants are obviously skilled and athletic. But the judging is very esoteric, and much of the sport is based on dissing and mocking your opponent...it's just not very Olympian, is it? Big contrast to some other newly added disciplines like Rugby 7 and sport climbing which quickly became very popular.

Someone cleverly suggested there should always be a recreational athlete competing with the pros, to better show how good they (the pros) really are. This is what it would look like.

We had Eddy "The Eagle" Edwards doing the Ski Jump in the winter Olympics.

Since then, the UK Olympic Committee only sends athletes that meet specific world entrance criteria. It's not enough to be the best in the country (which he probably was), and it's not even enough to get a specific invite from the IOC. They won't send you if you don't meet the mark.

Personally, I think this sucks - even the American method is fairer and that's a one-shot chance to qualify at a specific event and the first three get to go.
