Ms Meloni seems to be in the news a lot lately.  The US coverage is spotty and unreliable at best, but it seems that the newcomer to the office is doing pretty good.

I mean. she's no Silvio when it comes to being a character but as far as governing it looks to me like she's got her finger on Italy's pulse.

Anybody closer to events got a take?

My older sister works in an SF East Bay school district.  She likes Meloni, and tried to ask a coworker who was from Italy what she felt. This coworker  dismissively referred to Meloni as a fascist.

In europe, anyone who isn’t sufficiently left is a fascist or at least an extreme right wing. If they are proud of their national heritage they are at least far right.

She did a 180 on migration, unfortunately. Sometimes Europeans just can't win, voting for someone promising to deal with immigration who in the end doesn't deliver. Sometimes it actually gets worse than it was.

Wouldn't the Italian part of the immigration problem fall under the EU auspices?  I'd assume that Italy has to follow the EU to some degree on immigration.

I'd not be against the Regia Marina putting up a blockade if they could get away with it. (I assume the Italian navy is still called that but I don't know)

I guess the part that impressed me was when she introduced herself as "that bitch Meloni" to the guy that was calling her that...

Nah, not much of that has anything to do with EU, especially if one is determined. And don't call for an 'anti-immigration naval blockade' while campaigning when you're not going to deliver. If they arrive, deport them whatever the law says, it won't be easy for them to undeport themselves. Polish government, both previous right-wing and current 'centrist' one is doing 'illegal pushbacks' back to Belarus, nobody cares that it's technically not allowed due to some gay-ass refugee convention or other EU bullshit. And Italy is not Poland or Hungary (which was just fined by the EU for 200 mln EUR + 1 mln EUR a day for being mean to migrants), it's a lot more important player and thus their ability to get away with shit is proportionally higher.

And definitely don't allow shit like this:

Despite its pledges to stem rising flows of unauthorised migrants, Meloni's government has had little success.

Sea arrivals from North Africa have jumped to nearly 153,000 so far this year from almost 96,000 in the same period of 2022 and 63,000 in the same period of 2021, and close to a historic all-year peak of around 181,400 in 2016, according to government data.

Meanwhile, Italy has raised quotas for work visas for non-EU citizens to 452,000 for the period 2023-2025, an increase of nearly 150% from the previous three years. This year's quota - 136,000 - is the highest since 2008.

The visas are reserved for people who already have job offers and typically benefit undocumented migrants already in Italy who use the quotas to legalise their situation.

There aren't enough to satisfy requests.

The government has estimated a demand from businesses and unions for 833,000 permits over the 2023-2025 period. This year's quota was massively oversubscribed, with more than 600,000 pre-applications.

I want to see mass deportations from Europe, the biggest the world has ever seen.

if it's any consolation to you it is just as bad in the USA.  Neither we, nor you can absorb the quantity of immigrants without consequences both social and economic.  If I told you my actual thoughts on what is essentially a walking invasion I fear that your ears would bleed.  Consider it safe to say that my rules would be considered extreme.  I suspect that any politician would have to be careful with the issue.  Hopefully Meloni will bring results; certainly, her opposition would be worse.

Regia Marina = Royal Navy.  There are no King in Italy so now it is called Marina Militare

I'm pretty sure you wouldn't shock me one bit with your views. I and apparently 85% of my countrymen are actually in favor of shooting those trying to illegally cross the border.

On ANT1 (antenna) Greek news there are apparently demonstrations in Paris against the "the far right"

She handled Macron fairly well and didn't get "sniffed" by Uncle Joe.

I guess anyone in Italy who isn't a communist is considered a fascist?

She actually did belong to the fascist MSI party when she started in politics.  Real fascist as in followers of the late Benito Mussolini.  She seems to have moved much closer to the mainstream since.

So traditional Italian? 🤔

Under Stalin’s “theory of social fascism,” any socialist, social-democratic, or progressive group or party not loyal to him had to be called fascist. Hence, for a while Moscow insisted that FDR and even Norman Thomas (head of the Socialist Party of America) were fascists.

Ultimately, Communist propagandists and their allied intellectuals would reflexively blame fascism for everything, regardless of the facts. That’s what prompted George Orwell to remark that “the word Fascism has now no meaning except in so far as it signifies ‘something not desirable.’”

Immigration is no problem in Europe. In fact it is still too little and everybody should be welcome.

Here in hungary she is viewed by the right (the real one, not the fake right Orbán regime who are actually neoliberal globalists) as a traitor, who lied about everything. She didnt do anything she promised. The only positive thing is that Meloni is trying to resist the chinese economical colonization/exploitation.

We took in the Rhodesians. You can keep the Zimbabweans.

It occurred to me that Meloni is properly fit, she can guide the elderly.

I learned a good bit about Orban.

Not to change topic, but he sure ain't much of a nationalist if he's letting China set up shop in the country.

Szia! :)

Yes, Orbán is not a nationalist at all. His party is an extremely corrupt kleptocracy. In terms of political side, he is a neoliberal globalist. Not just the China thing. Also he serves german car manufacturers like a slave. While he definitely refuses to accept any migrants from africa and the middle east, he absolutely brings in migrants, by the thousands. Mainly from Philippines, but also from India, Pakistan, Uzbekistan, etc. They not only replace hungarians in workplaces, they also greatly contribute to bringing down salaries.
