17thfabn Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 This is one of those events that may end up just being a foot note in history or a huge event. News reports say a helicopter carrying the Iranian President and the foreign minister crashed and is missing. At this time news reports indicate that the helicopter is missing in a remote mountainous area. How long till this is blamed on the Jews / Israel? https://www.reuters.com/world/middle-east/helicopter-iranian-presidents-convoy-accident-says-strate-tv-2024-05-19/ https://apnews.com/article/iran-helicopter-raisi-b483ba75e4339cfb0fe00c7349d023b8
Josh Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 (edited) Politically isn’t the Iranian president not especially important? Ironically, similar to the Israeli president? I would not think it would have any major domestic or foreign policy effect, though presumably there will be some infighting choosing his replacement (however they handle such things). 17thfabn Posted May 20, 2024 Author Posted May 20, 2024 I was under the impression he ran things day to day and the ayatollah had over ride veto power. Also the ayatollah had direct control of the guards force.

Ivanhoe Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 The WaPo's article is behind a paywall, but purportedly no mention of the roughly 5,000 Iranians executed during his time in office, "death commissions" as the saying goes. At least ABC News gave some background; https://abcnews.go.com/International/wireStory/ebrahim-raisi-irans-president-helicopter-suffered-hard-landing-110375286 Quote The U.S. Treasury in 2019 sanctioned Raisi “for his administrative oversight over the executions of individuals who were juveniles at the time of their crime and the torture and other cruel, inhuman, or degrading treatment or punishment of prisoners in Iran, including amputations.” It also mentioned his involvement in the 1988 executions.
Josh Posted May 20, 2024 Posted May 20, 2024 actually as I noted in the mid East war thread, upon further research I found that Raisi was the heir apparent to Khamenie. If so, that makes his passing far more consequential domestically and means the IRGC has to rapidly consolidate around and promote a new candidate.

Stuart Galbraith Posted May 22, 2024 Posted May 22, 2024 (edited) Nobody. Its like Donald Trump when he goes on about 'how people say' how wonderful he is. Lets see, we have the vice President of India going to the funeral, Turkish officials and someone from Venezuela going. The usual dregs of the international community. 17thfabn Posted May 22, 2024 Author Posted May 22, 2024 I'm curious what the U.S. has done in similar situations in the past. Such as when Stalin, Mao etc passed away?
