France has approved the transfer of 30 Mirage 2000-9 fighter jets from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to Morocco, following successful negotiations between France and Morocco.

The transfer of these advanced fighter jets strengthens Morocco’s air capabilities, particularly in the context of regional tensions, according to sources consulted by LA RAZÓN, a Spanish newspaper. The Mirage 2000-9 is the latest iteration of the aircraft, specifically designed for the UAE Air Force and equipped with modern technology for high-precision air strikes.

The transfer required French approval as stipulated in the original sales agreement between France, the manufacturer, and the UAE. This agreement restricts the transfer of these jets to a third party without French consent.

According to the article, France’s initial hesitation stemmed from a desire to potentially repurpose the jets for Ukraine’s ongoing conflict with Russia. However, France ultimately agreed to the transfer after negotiations with the UAE.

The UAE reportedly sought the transfer of the Mirage 2000-9 jets to Morocco as a condition for finalizing a 2021 agreement to purchase 80 Rafale F4 fighter aircraft from France.

Good deal for Morocco as these jets have at least 10 year of life left in them. A bargin.

Any modifications/upgrades as part of the deal?

It's to replace the Mirage F1 fighter & ground attack variants. The original Mirage 2000-5 deal was for a high quality of equipment which included StormShadow ( it's called something else for the UAE). Now if SS is also included this will mean a new level of functionality for the Moroccan AF.

I would think that the original avionics would be somewhat dated by now.

Compared to the avionics in the Mirage F1 which has a single CRT multi-functional display it's almost alien like :)

The 2000-9 is supposed to have a similar cockpit to the -5, with three small MFDs and a fewer other digitized panels. Certainly, it has a 90s feel to it, but an improvement over the F1. As an aircraft it also represents a massive advance over the F1 in terms of raw performance, sensors, ECM and weaponry.

Cockpit of the -5, of a similar generation as (earlier) F-16Cs and F/A-18Cs:
