Markus Becker Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 I decided to skip work from June 14th to August 4th. So just in case someone has any ideas that sound good in the time frame let's hear them.
sunday Posted April 7, 2024 Posted April 7, 2024 Switzerland, Sweden, perhaps the Chicago-Boston trip...
Harold Jones Posted April 11, 2024 Posted April 11, 2024 My vacation time is limited this year and most of it is dedicated to a trip back to Denver in the fall. I could probably work in something like a Chicago (1st ID museum, etc) to Dayton (air force museum) leg.

DB Posted April 22, 2024 Posted April 22, 2024 With the Sh*tbarn likely to be running, I'd expect Tankfest to be utterly rammed - it usually is anyway. The food is still better in France. A hotel near Saumur would open up the Loire for investigation, if one were interested in chateaux.

There are some quite unique hotels, some in castles, even.

Neither fee nor reservation. Tankfest otoh is partially sold out already.
Harold Jones Posted April 26, 2024 Posted April 26, 2024 This time don't miss out (didn't even know it existed last trip) on the Cavalry museum https://www.ot-saumur.fr/en/horse-tours/saumur-cavalry-museum-5357157/
urbanoid Posted April 28, 2024 Posted April 28, 2024 I'm tentatively in for July/August. If earlier than that I'm out due to a busy period at work + I won't be allowed to fly until the end of June anyway.

Markus Becker Posted April 28, 2024 Author Posted April 28, 2024 Sounds familiar in an .... You will be ok.

That's the beauty of bushel baskets of swords and random Goliaths, they can use all that under utilized space museums have. The bushels of swords can be attractively displayed hanging off the walls and the Goliaths will fit neatly under most stuffed cavalry horses.
sunday Posted May 3, 2024 Posted May 3, 2024 Looking up logistics, there is a direct TGV-like connection from Paris Austerlitz station to Saumur. From Paris Charles de Gaulle airport to Paris Austerlitz station is 50 minutes by RER regional train.
sunday Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 I've been looking accommodations, from 11/07/24 to 18/07/24. Some hotels: Brit Hotel Saumur Hôtel Miléade Le Domaine de la Blairie - Saumur Les Terrasses de Saumur - Hôtel & Appartements - Restaurant & Spa (Logis)
Markus Becker Posted May 18, 2024 Author Posted May 18, 2024 Considering we did Paris and Northern France in 2018, what's west other than Saumur? St Nazaire and Lorient where the U boats used to be based come stop mind.
sunday Posted May 18, 2024 Posted May 18, 2024 (edited) Both Saint Nazaire and La Rochelle are about 2 hours away by car. Lorient is one hour more. Couple days visiting Loire castles could be add to the schedule. There is a French destroyer in Nantes: https://www.maillebreze.com/en National Museum of the Navy in Rochefort (2.5 hours from Saumur): https://www.rochefort-ocean.com/en/plan-your-stay/things-to-do/sightseeing-and-tours-in-rochefort-ocean/national-museum-of-navy-111239 Also in Rochefort (museum of the French Naval Aviation): https://www.rochefort-ocean.com/organiser/activites/visiter-les-sites-de-rochefort-ocean/musee-de-l-aeronautique-navale-221803 Edited May 18, 2024 by sunday
Markus Becker Posted May 19, 2024 Author Posted May 19, 2024 I see a plan coming together. Start point Paris by default, rent a car to be flexible?
sunday Posted May 19, 2024 Posted May 19, 2024 Renting a car in Paris CDG airport could be a starting point
