AT&T down

Found out that AT&T cell service has gone down, and no idea when it will be back up.  Lots of conspiracy theories, no real information on what exactly happened.  All I know is it is annoying since AT&T is my cell carrier, and the spouse unit is pissed she cannot call her sister.

ATT service in my AO is down, but our home wifi still works.

When I changed careers to the aviation field I bought a couple of satellite messengers to talk with family if one or both of us are in an area without cell coverage.  Good time to dust them off and make sure they're still working!

Speaking of, I've created a family email account that everyone knows the password to in order to use as a bulletin board  -- anyone who finds themselves with internet access can log in and see if a message was left in the draft folder (either a check-in, news, or otherwise).

I never lost service but my coworker did. There was a big solar flare last night.

There were several Japanese telecom company outages in July, August, and September in 2022.

Rakuten Mobile Inc. was instructed by the Japanese government on Friday not to repeat the massive disruptions of its mobile phone services and data transmission seen in September.

Some 110,000 people were affected by the phone service failures and 1.3 million people were hit by the data transmission disruption, caused by a software malfunction in equipment at a data center. The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications inspected the data center the following month.

...

In July, KDDI Corp., the operator of "au" brand mobile phone service, suffered a network outage that lasted over 60 hours, affecting more than 30 million people, with users unable to make emergency calls for an extended period.

Nippon Telegraph and Telephone West Corp. also experienced a massive internet network outage in August.

The two carriers have been instructed by the ministry to improve their service.

Likely not the cause. That wouldn't be so provider specific.

Also, there's another unidentified balloon over the US.
