methos Posted November 4, 2023 Posted November 4, 2023 It will depend on material, angle of impact and dimensions of both EFP and ERA. In general the cocnlusion in modern sciencitif papers seems to be that ERA sandwiches (and even some types of NERA) are not suited for dealing with EFPs. This is from a study comparing the performance of different EFPs (56 mm, 90 mm, 105 mm, 135 mm and 170 mm diameter made of iron, copper or tantalum) and different ERA targets (steel grade 1006 with plate thickness 1 mm plates with 1.5 mm explosive layers, 3 mm plates with 3 and 5 mm explosive layers). Most of these interactions were only computer simulated, but the smallest scale of experiments was also conducted. Fundamentally, the results were rather predictable. Higher angle of ERA and faster moving plates (thicker explosive layer) caused the biggest reduction in penetration, but the denser the EFP material, the less it was affected by ERA.

KV7 Posted November 5, 2023 Posted November 5, 2023 (edited) I suspect lower density high specific strength materials would perform well vs EFP. Roughly for the same reason they work well vs HEAT, but amplified due to the larger diameter of the EFP lowering penetration to the point where moderately high ME is enough to make a defeat possible without huge mass. For roof armour, this would also improve protection vs HE, over RHA, for a similar mass. Edited November 5, 2023 by KV7
