That or perhaps he just wanted to seem more reasonable in the eye of the public, i.e. "I only wanted to remove Shoigu and Gerasimov, not Putin, but he gave me no choice." In any case, he's crossed the Rubicon, and there's probably no going back now...

He is basically a Putin's dog who was used as a convenient tool first, then as a counterweight to MOD (I understand his structure was about  to be incorporated into military), but then decided it's time to become an alpha because he is loosing his master's favor or the hope for the position (Def Min) he aimed at...

However no matter how popular his stated goals may be, the way he went about it and the signs that nobody supported him (so far at least) does not bode well for him.

On nuclear weapons, I'm sure it's actually on most people's mind. But apart from obvious partisan satisfaction and the straight historic entertainment value - so much conventional wisdom about Russia has been dispelled in the last years:

- Russia is a rational actor which wants peace.

- Russia is a military juggernaut which will roll over any neighbor countries within days.

- We cannot support Ukraine, because it would mean war with Russia.

- Russia will never fall because the government has an iron grip on everyone, is not hindered by liberal weakness and Western decadence, the sanctions are useless, and Russians are used to suffering.

Suddenly, and maybe dangerously, the last dogma seems to be reasonably fit to be put to the test of reality: That civil war in a nuclear power is a Bad Thing.

Civil war in a non-nuclear power is also a bad thing, but there's no reason to believe Prigozhin or Putin will nuke Russia out of spite or that the chain of command will accept a command to use nuclear weapons on their own soil (and let's remember that warheads and vectors are under different commands)

And to think that those fucking monkeys could have just sat on their asses, keep selling oil and gas to Europe and vacation in St. Tropez.

Made to look like an armed march with the intention to remove specific boyars, get access to TV and force the changes onto Putin rather than replacing him.

Militarily, since Wagner lacks AD, they could be easily stopped by few air assets, but the optics for Putin would be terrible.  So, looks like instead multiple road blocks are created to slow them down and block at some point before they reach Moscow.

Well, it's not me who fucked up a good thing by starting this idiotic war.

I agree with you on this. Sadly some people are struggling to understand what a Russian Civil War would mean for the world. A nuclear power is on the verge of collapse and this means increased uncertainty for all of us, not only for them. Some truly don't understand the danger that the Russians and all of us will face in the coming days, months, years.

The English term is "gallows humor."

"To expel the Russian military from our country." Svetlana Tsikhanovskaya appealed to the army, officials and security forces.

The democratic leader of Belarus called on Belarusian diplomats, military and security forces to remember that Belarusians have their own national interests: " Neither Putin nor Prigozhin are friends of Belarus, and you should not choose their side . "

In addition, Sviatlana Tikhanovskaya expressed the opinion that the border with Russia should be closed:

" I also appeal to the Belarusian army - we cannot rely on fate and hope that Russia will leave Belarus alone. Now is the best chance to expel the Russian military from our country. If this chance is missed, Russia will do the same to us as it did to Ukraine.

Belarus should close the border with Russia and begin the withdrawal of Russian troops from Belarusian territory . "

FROM THE OPENING PRELUDE

4872895-James-M-Barrie-Quote-All-of-this

New audio statement by Prigozhin (00:03 BST), stating Wagner "crossed state borders in all areas" and is now entering Rostov, promising to "destroy anything standing in their way":

"The current situation: today, we were dealt a missile strike. After this strike, helicopters did their work. Then, artillery.

The orders were coming from the Head of General Staff to destroy PMC Wagner. After a meeting with the Minister of Defence Shoygu where they made this decision - to destroy the rebellious units, who are ready to defend the motherland, but not their asses.

As of now, we’ve crossed the state borders in all areas. Border guards came towards us and hugged our fighters.

Now, we’re entering Rostov. Units of the Ministry of Defence, in fact, the conscripts who were thrown to block our path, moved away.

We do not fight with children. We do not kill children. Shoygu is killing children by throwing untrained soldiers, conscripts included, into the war.

He set up 18-year-old lads against us. They’re like children and grandchildren to us. Therefore, these lads will live and return to their mothers.

We only fight with professionals. But if someone stands in our path, we will destroy EVERYTHING in our way.

We lend a hand to anyone. No need to spit in this hand. We are moving forward, going to the end.

Regarding claims regarding the arrest: this brotherhood, this justice, this honour, this conscience is what we have. But when you make these claims, you haven’t got these feelings. These feelings are destroyed. Thus, you cannot understand anything but betrayal."

There are rumours out there that Lukashenka stopped Wagner in it's tracks singlehandedly. This really is the most ridiculous thing to happen to a country since the Bolshevik revoltion.

Apparently Lukashenko has been negotiating with Prigozhin on behalf of Putin.  Supposedly the march on Moscow will stop.

Order will soon be restored and the combined forces will punish the Ukrainians.
