This will be slight economical problem for Russia, Ruble is very low compared to other currencies. Good for domestic budget deficit, bad otherwise.

Yes, I'm sure India would love to replace the Morris Oxford with the Lada.

It seems many Russian automotive products are quite good, especially off-road and bad road stuff.  There could have been quite a decent market in the West for them had the Russian auto compoany owners been more interested in business then theivery.

They are rugged, but Russian Ladas had a very bad reputation for assembly quality (like the cabling) in the 80s and 90s, when they were still widely exported to western europe. Fuel consumption was only decent on a Samara and bad on their other models, which had the aero of a brick.

Good small 4x4. The ones sold in Australia had complete electrical replacement done before sale, quite cheap on a semi production line basis.

Things like the morris oxford, minor and mini (pretty much any Brit car in fact) would have benefited from a similar exorcism to remove the dreaded Joseph Lucas prince of darkness

The Ural truck is world class, and could, as you say, have cleaned up in the West, had they chosen to do so.

Cars.... there was a really good video the other day I was watching about how the Soviet Car industry tried to catch up with the west in the late 1980's, because they wanted to export. And the advances they made were impressive to be sure. And hardly any of it went into production, and none of it got exported.

The only car to come close to killing me, a Lada Samara.  Admitedly it was driven by my soon to be ex wife.

around 2000 in estonia a dealer started to sell some new Lada model , 110 it went straight to no. 2 position in sales tables.

then, 2 months later it dropped out of charts and has not ever been sold again iirc.

i once around that time saw one 110 as taxi and took it, for some reason the floor under back seat felt like 20 cm higher than in any other car i´ve used.

around here only russian stuff that can be seen is  some Gaz-sadko 4x4 trucks used by  one powerlines company and there´s was a small company that tried importing rus. stuff from time to time, but it was like 4-10 trucks-etc. a year i think.

older rus stuff sometimes is still hanging around in background , farm next to my village  have one K700 tractor, used like 2-3 times a year, but everyday work is still done by john deeres etc.

funny to see john deere towering over K700 kirovets that seemed the biggest machine in the world  back in my childhood

My cousin, who drove a Lada Niva around his farm for, well, for decades, inherited my old Skoda Yeti a few years ago and tells me every time we talk that he feels like he's won the lottery.

And, frankly, in comparative terms, he has.

PS Although I do feel bad about that because I spent that whole time singing that Niva's praises. It was held together by wire, duct tape, old rusty screws and hope. And it never gave up.

A Lada Niva would be very cheap, handy rugged 4x4 if it did get that electrical replacement. Smart thinking from the people doing the importing. The ones around here typically came as they got out of the factory, though, and we had more Samara's and older FIAT-based cars here (less use for a Niva).
