Another Tanknetter used a hangar deck launch photo as his avatar.

Some early US carriers were also equipped with the capability to string arresting wires across the bow area, to be able to recover aircraft while steaming astern, if necessary.

I had read that aircraft were launched from the hanger deck, just not in this manner.

Thanks!  I was thinking of this very photo.  That had to be a very interesting visual challenge...
