That is an interesting question. The smaller Mk. 41 VLS module is a 8-cell launcher. Perhaps the "standalone" means a module without ancillary equipment, but I do not know for sure.

The mk41 by definition is a eight cell launcher; it comes as a single unit with all eight cells venting their exhaust through a common linear vent down the middle of the unit. Individual cells cannot function alone. I'm not sure what they mean, but I suspect it has something to do with combat system integration.
