Yes, blaming the video games is always the refuge of failed politicians.

It's how you use that straw on the camel's back. Add the lack of fathers, a lack of respect for education, an "I'm owed" attitude along with a lack of responsibility and yes violent video games will be a straw in the bundle.

So will any cultural influence. Lets ban all Rock and Roll because of is vivid sexual imagery. Then lets ban all rap for its racist, mysogynist, violent lyrics. Then lets ban Willie Nelson for his vivid imagery of a preacher killing anyone because his woman got stolen.Rolling Stones, Beatles, Johnny Cash. Then lets go to movies. The truth is, if you are saying that some people are a danger when they come in contact with mass culture, then you are right. But surely that is saying the problem is really the nature of the person, than the nature of the culture. Some people are just born bad, and they may be influenced in some actions by culture, but they arent convinced to be bad BY culture. Thats just saying people have no free will, which I dont believe.

There are many stories of people with no fathers and poor backgrounds making something of themelves, just as the reverse. Nobody turns round and say 'Well it was the complete lack of intereaction with mass culture that made him the man he is'.

Its an excuse, its not an explanation.

A week ago or so I installed 2016 Doom that I bought a few years ago and forgot about it. I think I'm no closer to making 'glory kills' out on the street than I was before.

It comes to mind that there are two broad categories of monster. The first is the full-on psychopath* who could be triggered by any random thing; rising avocado prices, counterclockwise-rotating windmills, satellite internet, "the voices," etc. 

Then there is the sociopath* who is absolutely looking for an excuse to harm others. There's a lot more of this. 

If we are going to blame violent video games, we must also blame TV news, Youtube, literature, movies, music, etc. Yes, there may be a desensitization effect in some, but seeds only grow in fertile soil. 

Our society does not want to accept that a small but nonzero percentage of the adult population has violently criminal tendencies (some time wayback I read something along the lines of about 3% over the centuries). Healthy societies deal with the disease, not the symptoms.

I'm sure you are not a fan of his, but Michael Moore made this point in bowling for columbine. Ie, the near last thing the killers did before the shooting was go bowling. So why not blame the violence on bowling? Because it suited the media to blame it on 'violent' computer wargames.

The is a very fine book called mindhunter (turned into a good Netflix series), about the early FBI criminal profiling unit (think Agent Starlings questionaire). They seemed to get a variety of serial killers. Disorganised, who just killed in a chaotic way for chaotic reasons.They generally got caught fairly quick. The organized ones were no less interesting. You tended to get the ones that were manufactured, made the way they were by abuse. And others, a good example being Ted Bundy, who just enjoyed manipulating people, and raping and murdering women. His reasoning, that he was dissatisfied with his mother not explaining he was born out of wedlock, seems a wholly inadequate  explanation  for his crimes. Basically, he was an evil bastard, largely it seems because he just enjoyed it.

To be fair to sociopaths, there is a wide spectrum of sociopathy. I'm told that mild sociopaths make really great doctors, and financiers apparently.
