Found this case between the UK and Germany.  How common were these?

I cant speak how common they were, but they were certainly well known. Its even the central plot point of a really rather good film starring Michael Redgrave.

Annoys me that my Grandfather was never offered one, but then he was only a private, they were probably more interested in Officers.

Found this footage of a prisoner exchange at St. Nazaire.  Safe to assume those Germans were not going anywhere for quite some time.
