Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota has ended his presidential campaign.

In other news, Gov. Doug Burgum of North Dakota had a presidential campaign.

Not really 2024 primary news, but not worth its own topic: McCarthy will resign at the end of the year, before the 2024 election.

When I heard interviews with him he seemed sharp. Never really got much attention.

Latest Iowa poll is not looking good for any candidate not named Trump.  https://www.desmoinesregister.com/story/news/politics/iowa-poll/caucus/2023/12/11/iowa-poll-ron-desantis-nikki-haley-unable-to-shrink-donald-trumps-overwhelming-lead-iowa-caucuses/71850893007/

A new Des Moines Register/NBC News/Mediacom Iowa Poll shows 51% of likely Republican caucus goers pick Trump as their first choice for president, up from 43% in an October Iowa Poll.

Cardi B. posted a mostly incoherent rant on social media, that people are interpreting as a slam against Biden and Democrats in general. One good line she repeated was "We'll be swimming in rats!" referencing budget cuts to waste disposal and public health in NYC due to the budget strains from the illegals.

Perhaps if she wasn't leaking so much...

I think it has been pretty clear that Trump is going to run away with this thing. Even if he lost Iowa, he can easily pull more delegates in highly populated winner take all states late in the contest to wrap it up (the California GOP has made this easier for him a few months ago). As it is, I think he just wins every state outright. Perhaps NH goes to someone else or Niki can make a last stand in NC, but it won't change anything. All she and Ron are fighting over is who gets to be the replacement if Trump dies.

It is so weird that a year ago DeSantis was in the lead; I never would have thought Trump would have rebounded if you had told me then. I think the indictments ironically had a big role to play - it gave hum a huge amount of free publicity and a savior complex to play off of ("I'm fighting these indictments so they don't come for you"). That and meatball Ron is just too devoid of any charisma even for the MAGA wing.

I got the impression in the 2020 leadership campaign  that the US media cycle has a carousel of hopefuls that are sold as the 'next' big thing, and all of them live up to the hype...right up until the moment that they come under the media spotlight.  Then their popularity craters.  Haley seems a little different in that she's held her own under scrutiny, but DeSantis seems to more closely fit the pattern.

It is fairly typical for US primary cycles to move violently, because it often involves a small amount of voters listening to a narrow number of news outlets in a very short news cycle that hasn't truly made its mind up yet. There was a time when Herman Caine was very ascendant in the polls in 2016, just to give a random example that makes no sense. What is a little odd is how much Stiletto Ron was up on Trump and then flamed out even before primary season really got started, particularly given Trump's very low approval rating post Jan 6th. But of course, conservative media explained away Jan 6th for conservative voters, and Ron ended up being the clockwork orange of the orange man: he went through the motions of culture war and "telling it like it is" without having any of the gift of gab that Trump has for his crowd.

DeSantis and Haley are hovering waiting for Trump to drop dead out of the blue.
Gavin Newsom and his I-am-not-running-but-I-totally-am shtick is doing the same, but for Biden.

But otherwise it really is looking like a repeat of 2020.

Good Lord, America.  Really?

It's the voters first, then the politicians. The erasing of responsibility.

Wasn't there a recent constitutional amendment that you need to be over 70, showing signs of dementia, and having a proven record of shady business dealings and inappropriate sexual conduct to run for POTUS? 🤔

Yes, but Hillary Clinton is not running and there was no clause to allow Bill to run.

Trump has already shown that you can run for power with the whole DC establishment against you, that alone is a huge victory. The swamp critters will now be living in fear.

Haley finally had her first big fumble by dropping the ball when asked what caused the Civil War and not mentioning slavery (she's actually been pretty weak on handling issues around this subject going back the last decade).  Honestly, though... I wonder if this actually gives her a small bump in the R polls?

He's done enough to earn a cabinet spot if he wants one should Trump win the whole enchilada.

IMO, that was his only goal all along.

If you ever wondered which side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!

If a Republican doesn't like guns, he doesn't buy one.
If a Democrat doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn't eat meat.
If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Republican doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Democrats demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it.
A Democrat demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a Republican reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A Democrat will delete it because he's "offended".

I figured his goal was the VP nod.  At this point... who else is even in contention for that?  There's been local talk that Lake has a shot but she's already running for the Senate and I think VP talk is just local media trying to get those MAGA page hits on their website.
