Mikel2 Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 (edited) One thing that puzzles me - HMS Vanguard went down not far from Royal Oak, with greater loss of life, yet she doesn't get nearly as much attention as Royal Oak. Or maybe that's my perception. Also, Vanguard was heavily salvaged, whereas that never happened to Royal Oak, even though both only became protected in the 80s. Edited February 7, 2023 by Mikel2
alejandro_ Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 Thank you. I had not seen those detailed scans of torpedo damage. In youtube there are a few documentaries about the sinking. 8 hours ago, Mikel2 said: One thing that puzzles me - HMS Vanguard went down not far from Royal Oak, with greater loss of life, yet she doesn't get nearly as much attention as Royal Oak. I guess Vanguard was sunk in an accident, so it does not have all the drama of the Royal Oak. Last year I read "Nightmare at Scapa Flow: The Truth About the Sinking of HMS Royal Oak", by H. J. Weaver. The author does a good job analyzing all the propaganda published after the sinking and finding the real facts about the sinking.
Mike1158 Posted February 7, 2023 Posted February 7, 2023 Horrific events both. The video you posted is possibly yhe best I have seen in terms of information delivered, the scans no doubt contribute a lot there. Having revisited the HMS Vanguard event the 100 report came up, https://chesapeaketech.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/05/HMS_Vanguard_100_Survey_Report_2018a7549cc2c9f729a6.pdf which I found on t'webb. What strikes me most is that we keep saying, 'never again'.
RETAC21 Posted February 14, 2023 Posted February 14, 2023 The report mentioned in the video: https://discovery.dundee.ac.uk/ws/portalfiles/portal/56863842/Royal_Oak_80_Final_Report_v10_combined_FIN.pdf
RETAC21 Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Unrelated, USS Albacore identified https://www.history.navy.mil/news-and-events/news/2023/nhhc-identifies-albacore-wreck-site.html
Stuart Galbraith Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 I was listening to a podcast the other day, turns out the wreck of HMS Captain has been narrowed down to two ships. An expedition is currently being financed to do a site survey.

Mikel2 Posted February 24, 2023 Author Posted February 24, 2023 Somewhat unrelated - Survivors of the destroyer HMS Glowworm seen from the Admiral Hipper after the Glowworm rammed the Hipper, seen through a rangefinder from the Hipper. The balls those people had...
Mike1158 Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 One of many like situations of the time. I keep hoping someonw will locate and film her (And HMS Kelly etc) but it's unlikely tbh. Not enough interest due to the exhorbiitant cost's apparently. ...and yes, very big and solid Brass.
Stuart Galbraith Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Well its worth reflecting the RN is getting a vessel equipped with ROV's. Not to hunt for shipwrecks, but to keep an eye on our pipelines and undersea cables. It seems likely at least part of the time they are going to be picking up shipwrecks and adding to the knowledge of whats left. It would be nice to think she might have a couple of jolly's around the Med to go and search for targets like that. For one, Id like HMS Upholder to be found, particularly as she was a such gallant ship, and her commander a VC holder.
Mike1158 Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 I believe there is already a $7it load of data that has been acquired using dark tech kept under wraps. Might we see it someday? possibly.
Stuart Galbraith Posted February 24, 2023 Posted February 24, 2023 Well, Titanic was discovered using secret methods. Im sure ive read that USN deep see magnetometers played a role in narrowing down the position of the Titanic for Dr Ballard for example.
