If heroism encompasses the willingness of self-sacrifice, I'm not sure if Roy Batty (or William Wallace) qualify.

Ok, so its not a conventional hero by any means. But if Richard III's death is heroic, despite the life he lived, then Tony Montana's death is no less so. And besides, who doesnt enjoy the thought of telling someone to piss off with a 40mm grenade launcher. Im sure we have all been there. :)

I guess I'd vote for Hodor in that case - though it seems like he was under extratemporal telepathic control, and it's unclear how much of it was his own free will.

For me, the main characters in Seven Samurai who perish. 

Kikuchiyo, Heihachi, Kyūzō, Gorōbei. The fact that they did the ending battle scene in the freezing cold, wet rain, is epic.
