Let’s expand this a bit: I’m definitely available on the weekend but also on Monday and Tuesday, probably Friday too. And there is some interesting stuff close by.

Nijmwegen is a 45 minute drive from the war museum, Arnhem another 20 minutes. Not too far away these days.

A further 2:30-ish hours north is the naval museum at Den Helder and at the Germany border the 17th century fort/village Bourtange.

Set up base at Arhem, do the bridges on day one, the tanks at day two and Den Helder on the last day and off to Schipol if you need to?

I have approval from HH6, the outstanding questions for me is if she will be coming along and the actual timeline of the trip.  I/we would probably arrive in Amsterdam on the morning of the 19th but departure date is somewhat flexible.  Would like to devote a couple days to Amsterdam.

Schiphol seems like a good choice for a base.

Den Helder and Arnheim are 75-ish minutes away, Soesterberg just 45, Overloon ~100, Amsterdam is right nextdoor. Schiphol is easy to get to from overseas and by train from Hannover/Berlin.

Friday 19th: arrival (and a first trip into Amsterdam?)

Saturday: 20th Overloon

Sunday 21: Soesterberg and maybe Arnheim too. Or is each enough for one day?

Monday: 22nd Den Helder naval museum

Tuesday: 23rd alternative Arnheim/Nimwegen or something else.

💡 I see if I can get an I&I expert planner to have a look at this.

PS: I'm quite confident I could get away from work for another one or more days.

I'm taking a pass on that this time - I want to try the fast train route. My eyesight is degrading, too so I'd rather not have the responsibility.

With Arnheim/Nimwegen being a full day event we have one more place to visit -Fort Bourtange- than I have days off work. I'm confident I could get one or two more but at this time I can't say for sure. So I'd put an alternate schedule up for discussion:

Friday: Start I&I and provided all arrive by 12hrs and feel in shape a visit to the army museum "around the corner" at Soesterberg.

Saturday: Overloon

Sunday: Fort Bourtange

Monday: Arnheim/Nimwegen

Tuesday: Den Helder and possibly end I&I for me.

Wednesday/Thursday: Amsterdam for everyone with the time.

Or we just drop Fort Bourtange and the 2.5 hour drive there. But I'd like Den Helder to be on the last day because I have to drive 3.5 hours home afterwards.

According to guests reviews on hotels.com, it is pretty good and inexpensive both.

Edited to add: Looking up a bit, bathrooms look a bit outdated, wardrobes have no doors, no coffee in room.

Found this other one, next door to the Ibis: https://www.corendonhotels.com/corendon-plaza-amsterdam-schiphol-airport/

Another option: https://www.wyndhamhotels.com/ramada/amsterdam-netherlands/ramada-amsterdam-schiphol-airport/overview

Price-wise not too much difference between the hotels around the airport. The IBIS does have few free rooms left in the best price category, so I'll propose this as an alternative.

Final decision on hotel to be made when we know how many attend for sure.

Best Western has free parking, IBIS wants 19,-€ per day extra.

Another amenity to consider is the availability of free shuttles to the airport/Amsterdam

Put me as a very likely yes.

According to the travel agency, buffet breakfast for 4 days at that hotel only costs 9 euros, at the hotel is 17 euros/day. May be an interesting thing to book with the room.

Edited to add: that military museum at Soesterberg is large, it is one hour away from the hotel, and it closes at 17:00. Check in at the hotel opens at 15:00. We could depart at 12:00, but some place to leave luggage would be needed. For instance, someone could arrive Thursday 18, check in, then his room could be used as luggage storage.

Works for me. Someone could check with the hotel about storing baggage prior to checkin - I know that one of the Holiday Inns I've stayed at previously could do that.

Eurostar direct from St Pancras to Amsterdam Centraal is quick and cheap (could be as low as £150 return), but I'd need to get back out to Schiphol on a local service. The alternative is Eurostar to Brussels Midi and Thalys to Schiphol direct, adding more than an hour, and not sure about the cost yet.

I just fancy a trip on the train @300km/h, been about 20 years since I did it.

You could take a train that takes you from Amsterdam Centraal to Schiphol in 17 minutes, then take the free shuttle bus to the hotel.

Playing with Google Maps there are some alternatives, including a train connection in Rotterdam.

Edit to add: Schiphol offers luggage storage for 6€/day, so it could be retrieved by car, or by free shuttle, after the visit to the museum/supper. Cheaper that book one extra night, as the hotel does not offer that service.
