Dawes Posted January 19, 2023 Posted January 19, 2023 Presumably gun camera footage confirmed these kills? https://taskandpurpose.com/news/navy-cross-royce-williams-dogfight/

It was also confirmed through Soviet archives in the 1990s, apparently. The ehtire incident was classified ubtil the 2000s.

Dawes Posted January 20, 2023 Author Posted January 20, 2023 "When he was debriefed, he was quickly made aware of the real implications of what he had just done. With the Cold War in full swing, he had shot down actual Soviet jets — and, unbeknownst to him during the flight, he had been directed towards them based on a classified intelligence collection program from the National Security Agency." So this apparently wasn't a chance encounter.
sunday Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 (edited) Wow, that would be one of the greatest deeds in aerial combat ever. Edited January 20, 2023 by sunday
Stuart Galbraith Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 Taking on several Mig15's in a Panther shows some pretty excellent combat skills. The two aircraft were not in the same league. There was another incident where I think it was two USAF pilots got lost, and strafed an airfield in the USSR and destroyed several dozen Airacobra's. Sadly they wont get a gong for it.

Stuart Galbraith Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 I'd love to know what they told Stalin.
Mike1158 Posted January 20, 2023 Posted January 20, 2023 "Comrade, we fifteen General staff officers have come with terrible news. This Captain is the responsible officer and he will tell you how he allowed the enemies of the state to destroy assets for the defence of the motherland. Perhaps we can just shoot him and call it case closed"?
Dawes Posted January 21, 2023 Author Posted January 21, 2023 I would say that the Soviets could claim damage and destruction of "expensive Soviet property", but they were probably Lend-Lease P-39's.
Stuart Galbraith Posted January 21, 2023 Posted January 21, 2023 Whereupon the Americans would say that if the Soviets paid them for the destroyed P39's, they would just call it quits.
