Stuart Galbraith Posted December 12, 2023 Posted December 12, 2023 Got America out of Vietnam, laid the ground for peace between Israel and Egypt, reduced the megatonage between the superpowers, albeit briefly. There has been worse, much worse. I think Al Haig was far worse personally. I struggle to think of anything good that useless fucker did.
Stefan Fredriksson Posted December 13, 2023 Posted December 13, 2023 Actor Andre Braugher, at 61. For me best known for his role in "Homicide..." series.

Most Americans know him for his role in Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and he is good at deadpan humor, but IMHO his work on Homicide was exceptional.

Braugher's one man honor guard for Det. Steve Crosetti literally moved me to tears.
lucklucky Posted December 13, 2023 Author Posted December 13, 2023 Great actor. Only saw him in Homicide.
R011 Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 He was pretty good as a keen young intellectual turned soldier in Glory.
Stuart Galbraith Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 Yeah, thats the only thing I know him for. He did a real good job with that.
TrustMe Posted December 14, 2023 Posted December 14, 2023 (edited) He was also in a favorite film of mine "The Mist" https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0884328/?ref_=nv_sr_srsg_0_tt_8_nm_0_q_the%20mist Edited December 14, 2023 by TrustMe

You really should try to find Homicide on one of the free online channels. IMHO its one of the best police procedurals done in the US.
bojan Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 Wire, Homicide and... pretty much nothing else could be compared. There were decent attempts, Southland was good, as was Bosch and few more, but IMO nothing managed to really get there.
TrustMe Posted December 19, 2023 Posted December 19, 2023 I have fond memories of Hill Street Blues from 1982.

No sunny California skies and palm trees, just a rainy, snow covered, miserable north eastern urban landscape.
Stuart Galbraith Posted December 20, 2023 Posted December 20, 2023 Used to like NYPD Blue. At least in part because of Kim Delaney I suspect. There is quite a lot of old TV series on Youtube if you are willing to look for them. Danger UXB and the Sandbaggers foremost among them.
Harold Jones Posted December 27, 2023 Posted December 27, 2023 2023 claims another one https://www.wbtv.com/2023/12/27/tommy-smothers-smothers-brothers-comedy-duo-dies/

Ssnake Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Wolfgang Schäuble, long-time professional politician. MP from 1972 to 2023, and as such the longest-serving member of all time in Germany. Negotiated the terms of the German reunification as minister of the interior, balanced the budget as a minister of finance under Merkel, president of parliament, and has been credited to move the the German capital from west German Bonn back to Berlin with a speech that may have tipped the vote in favor of Berlin. Also, suffered from paraplegia as the result of an October 1990 assassination attempt. His involvement in the shady financing practices of the Christian Democratic Party probably killed his chances at becoming the Chancellor of Germany, creating the conditions for Angela Merkel to bypass him and other influential party figures.
BansheeOne Posted December 28, 2023 Posted December 28, 2023 Yeah, he was heir apparent to Helmut Kohl whom he first served as chief of staff before becoming interior minister for the first time. Many expected he would get the nod for the 1998 candidacy, but then Kohl decided to run for an unprecedented fifth term, and promptly got shot down in flames by Gerhard Schröder. In fairness, that might just have saved Schäuble from the same fate; after 16 years of CDU-led government, with resentment over the effects of reunification mounting, there was a clear popular mood for change. He became CDU head afterwards, but stepped down over the financing scandal, clearing the way for Merkel. The ultimate party soldier, loyal to a fault, if personally often abrasive; 50 years in politics, getting shot in the spine halfway through, will do that to people of course.
