I guess if we have threads with a best before date, we need a new one for anything that starts from a week from now.

Looking forward to a new season of Yellowjackets (it's so fucked up and is catnip for '90s kids). I guess I sorta care about the dragon stuff, seems like there's going to be more warfare.

The last of us. First episode.

Wow. This is really good. Good characters, good world building and very well paced. Almost as good as the start of The walking dead. Or better?

Kaleidoscope. Yawn. Good idea, but except for a few moments, kind of boring. And characters generally unlikable. And Esposito's "younger" make-up/cgi? is horrible.

Has anyone seen The Rig on Amazon Prime Video? it started off very mysterious but im 3 episodes in and it's gone a bit 1950's style Monster Movie with bad script.

Well, it is from 2022, but have finally watched Andor in 2023... :)

Extremely good, especially characters like Maarva Andor (whole "I walked across that square" story was sheer brilliance), Luthen Rael ("What have I sacrificed?) and Syril Karn.

Only real problem with it*, and frankly it is almost insulting to such well written characters is that they exist in the same universe as characters made to sell children's toys like Vader, Yoda and rest. :(

*There are minor issues along, like "stupid Imperium" trope that is showing at the moments, but nothing that can not be be put beyond "suspension of disbelief".

9/10, and unlike Rogue One (oh irony...) they took "partisan genre" to the hilt this time, and final result was far more seriously and better this time. Damn it, I was expecting to hear SW version of this at any moment.

I'm waiting for Dedra and Syril to 'smash' in the next season.

I've never understood the "ship" fandom at all. the story is the story, it's where the writers take it and fanfic, especially slash, is just an annoyance. perhaps that's only really true if the original story is strong enough.

I particularly despise happy ending re-writes. if the ending was too sour for you, go and watch children's TV.

Has anyone seen the third season of The Mandloran?

I thought it was great, a mix of blaster fights and subtle humor.

Well the other day I saw a bus stop ad depicting the guy taking off on his rocket backpack with Baby Yoda on his arm and his cape on fire while shooting his blaster, and thought "dumbass, that's what you get for wearing a rocket pack and a cape".

It's pretty good. Just amusing that same actor is making also Last of Us with very similar episodes. :D

I do understand that after a while, there are no new ideas, just recycled. And this "wokeness" limits it too.

I have an Indie Sci Fi called Prospect with Pedro Pascal in it before he was famous. He was good in that too but it's not a film for everyone.

Picard season 3. 2 episodes in, and it is quite good.

Last of us. Bill and Frank episode. I am not crying, you are crying. A perfectly written piece of TV. I think, though, the episode should have ended after the last dinner. Would have made even more perfect.

Rewatched True Detective. Mcconaughey was as good as I renembered him. Very well written and acted story, well worth a rewatch a few years later.

Aimed to young adults, quite decent, some wokeism when compared to the books. Not bad.

Just wanting to say "This is the Way" when watching Last of Us. :D

LoU is OK but not great. Simply did not feel the same attachment to it that I have felt to the first game, which while I did not play (will never buy console of any sort) I have watched some guy play on YT, creating practically TV show like experience.

Given the amount of television and films available for streaming these days I think it would take a decade or so for me to notice a complete shutdown so a month or two won't even be a blip.

I'm trying to find a reason to justify keeping any of the streaming services I have (Netflix, HBOMax, Disney+).

I finally finished Andor two nights ago.  I had watched the first three episodes months ago when I first got Disney+ and while those first three episodes were good... they weren't great.  Only went back to finish it after reading in several places how good the series was.  Yeah... those folks were right.  Once I started the 4th episode I binged the rest of it in two evenings.  That show ended up being absolutely, fucking amazing.

But I can say that only for one other series I've seen across all those services in the last 6 months - Loki.

Otherwise... all the offerings have been 'meh'.  HBOMax just added The Last Ship... I couldn't make it through the first episode.  Had a brief sub to Peacock and tried getting into BSG... and again couldn't make it through the first episode.

Like... I get the arguments behind the writer's strike currently going on and they have a strong case their agreement needs to be updated.  I also remember what happened to several shows back during the last strike and how much worse things got.  But... it's crazy to think these are the 'pros' yet IMNSHO the overwhelming majority of their work is just not that good.  (Case in point - what the 'pros' have done to the Witcher series.)  Good shows are so few and far between... it's a shame the market is so hungry for screen entertainment that bad writing is tolerated and even desired in such large quantities.
