X-Files Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Of special amusement to Echo Five Mike / Echo Six Mike
shep854 Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 My first thought when I saw this was that the aircraft would be used as a sort of inexpensive stealth transport. Expending them as decoy drones is just evil.
Sardaukar Posted December 13, 2022 Posted December 13, 2022 Shades of North Korea in a book. https://www.amazon.com/Red-Phoenix-Larry-Bond/dp/0446514330 It had SF attack via An-2s etc.

seahawk Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 The Azeris did the same and used them as decoys.
Josh Posted December 14, 2022 Posted December 14, 2022 There were a large number of An-2s in Belarus just before the war kicked off; it was never clear how they ended up being used. I had assumed there would be part of the air assault effort since they could land on practically any suitably flat piece of territory but I've not seen any footage of their use. I'd expect converting one into a drone is actually more expensive than just building a Shahed type drone; the Aeries didn't make them remote controlled they simply flew them towards the target and bailed out. THAT is very cost effective, since it requires no mods to the plane. It does require a cadre of pilots willing to do some sky diving though.
