You know, this retirement thing is great.  The very very very best part is I get to say the word "NO!" to people, and not get over-ruled (except by She Who Must Be Obeyed), and I can do what the Fark I want to do.  I get to get up when I more or less want to get up (the dogs have their own ideas),  I go to coffee shops (unless they are packed), I must say, I am glad I am here, and there is NO FARKING WAY I would ever go back to work in law enforcement....ever.

Yeah, every day seems like Sunday.

Got called by a buddy who offered me a job with the Bexar County DA's Office as an investigator:  My answer: NO!

Got offered a job back at the Sheriff's Office: My Answer: NO!

Got offered a job with a Constables office (actually two): My Answer-NO!!!

I love being able to say NO!

Back in days it was also great to be in "KMA Club" even when having a job.

I think you know KMA is "kiss my ass". Basically meaning they could not fire you and had no leverage over you since you could not be promoted or leveraged other ways. :D

Don't slow down. You will be dead inside 5 years.

Reinforcing this.

Longevity has been big in the health/wellness scene over the last few years and some things are (though really always were) obvious.  You need to still push yourself physically and intellectually or you'll lose both quickly and the amount of work to try and build back is something most retirees aren't willing to do.  A scary stat I heard not too long ago - if you're in your 60s, fall, and break a bone your mortality rate within the year is something crazy like 40%.

I've seen this with my mother.  Retired after her bout with COVID and promised to stay active.  Every time I walk in the door to visit I can hear the levers of her La-Z-Boy activating and the TV blaring in the other room.  In less than a year she looks like she's aged 10.  She also had a fall recently (a very clear sign she hasn't been staying up on her fitness) on the way to the store.  Thankfully just scratches from that... but it should have been a warning to her.

I am trying to not be stationary.  I get up each morning and go to a coffee shop with a laptop and then sometimes go and do other things.  I suspect I will be dead in 5 years anyway since most retired cops don't last really long.   But I plan on going out at full throttle screaming "What a ride!".

Try to keep up something dynamic. From the job perspective, maybe something investigatory and giving you something to chew on?

Oh no, no jobs related to cop work.  I am having a blast right now totally f'ing off and doing what I want to do.  Maybe next year I will get bored, but right now, I am having my belated second youth.

Some time down the road, you should think about teaching AOJ classes. Be a tragedy for all your knowledge to not diffuse into baby cops.

Im glad its all working out for you Murph. My father became almost a new man upon his retirement. Final day he dumped his work boots in the bin, and he was glad to do it.

Perhaps you ought to write what you did down? Or do a Podcast, cant help but think someone who did the job offering their perspective on recent events might prove interesting.

staying active really does matter.  You DO have to push yourself.  There's no reason to die in a few years just because everyone else does.

If you can't do anything else.  Chop wood; with an axe.

Problem is that these millenials and Gen Z don't care and don't want to hear what old dinosaurs like me have to say.

Congratulations and enjoy it! Within 6 - 8 years I will retire and I like to do a blacksmith course and then ''work'' at the local open air museum were they display old crafts. I'am afraid that after so many years away the supreme commander at home and I get issues when we are 24/7 near each other (in a good way). We are not used to it......
