RAF jets shot down 53 drones in their largest mass firing of advanced short-range air-to-air missiles.

Over 10 days, pilots from eight different squadrons successfully downed dozens of target drones over the sea at the Hebrides Air Weapon Ranges in Scotland last month.

Typhoon and Lightning jets were involved in the test, which is designed to help the pilots and weapons crews gain confidence in using the infrared-guided missiles and give them real-world experience of firing them.

No, well, yes, perhaps, but that's not how this sort of thing works.

The exercise will have been in planning for months, and probably was planned before Feb 24.

It was just let loose whilst flying next to an RC135 according to one report, 'technical malfunction'.

https://www.novinite.com/articles/217162/London%3A+A+Russian+Su-27+Fired+a+Missile+near+a+British+Spy+Plane+over+the+Black+Sea

"The Russian Defense Minister's response, received on October 10, said that they investigated the circumstances of the incident and stated that there was a technical malfunction of the Su-27 fighter jet. They also acknowledged that the incident took place in the international airspace," Wallace pointed out.

Its the reason why British RC135's are now being escorted by Typhoon.

The news reports said simply "close by". Rhe Russias claimed it was due to a technical error. None the less, the RAF Rivet Joints are now flying with fighter protection which will be costly in airframe time and support protection (tankers and AWACS).

The tankers stay in NATO airspace. The only at risk asset is the 135 flights over the Black Sea.

That distance means that more fighter will be needed to support a single Rivet Joint flight - time taken to go to the tankers and back -
