DB Posted July 31, 2022 Posted July 31, 2022 A refreshing change that it isn't English that is seen as the oppressor's language. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-africa-62368931 At least it isn't Chinese.
Ivanhoe Posted December 7 Posted December 7 https://nypost.com/2025/12/07/world-news/benin-soldiers-announce-on-television-they-seized-power-from-president-patrice-talon-in-apparent-coup/ Quote A group of soldiers in the West African nation of Benin claimed on national television to have seized power on Sunday, though the government said forces loyal to President Patrice Talon were working to foil the coup plot. The move was latest threat to democratic norms in the region, coming after a coup in Guinea-Bissau last month marked the ninth in West and Central Africa since 2020. At least eight soldiers, several wearing helmets, went on state television to announce that a military committee led by Colonel Tigri Pascal had taken over and was dissolving national institutions, suspending the constitution and closing air, land and maritime borders. That part of Africa seems to have a lot of excitement. Eagle Industries used to make a Biafran Mile Run Pouch, the back story of which is amusing. I cannot find a good web page on the back story any more, but the TL;DR is that a coup occurred and western residents/visitors had to run a mile to the neighboring country to avoid being detained by the junta. Basically a small chest rig with just enough room for a pistol, passport, and enough cash to bribe your way into a non-revolting country.
