Stuart Galbraith
My favourite Hostage rescue game of the 1990s. There was an even better follow whose name escapes me.
Sardaukar
DK 2 is still in Early Access and right now having small discount on Steam too (-10%), so it's reasonably priced. Edited July 3, 2022 by Sardaukar
Skywalkre
22 hours ago, Ssnake said: Welllll... Plain X-Com 2 actually not so much. Then there's that minor expansion with "Advent" troops that makes it a bit more interesting in that you now also have to deal with a human collaborator faction with their own tech tree (from which you can capture stuff). War of the Chosen (WotC) was then another complete game changer. Worth checking out, but maybe only after you played through the base X-Com 2 once or twice. By which time you probably won't find it so hard anymore. Hmm... looking at XCom 2 on the Steam page (and the separate launch portal for it after you start it through Steam) the only followup is WotC. The rest are small mission bundle/gear packs. Could this other expansion be default in the game now? Almost all troops I come across are these Advent guys who drop scopes and such.
Ssnake
I don't remember if this simply was an option to start XCom2 with right from the start, or whether it was a separate DLC. Anyway, you seem to have it, problem solved.

Stuart Galbraith
Yeah, its pretty great. Im trying to go and and tick off the achievements list. Supposedly there is one where you can dissolve the Vice President in Acid, which is not an achievement Id particularly rejoice in, but knowing I can it seems difficult to not want to tick that one off the list. He was bloody annoying when all is said and done. From what I read, they are intending to add to it, including DLC. Hopefully we will get the second term along with that. Stuart Galbraith
One other I ought to mention, very odd, is cultist simulator. It replicates being a disciple of unholy magic. Think of yourself as a cross between Aliester Crowley and Saruman, and you kind of have it. Its hard to play, opaque, bloody infuriating, and yet strangely compelling. Its like being in a novel set in the 1920s written by Dennis Wheatley. If you like 'The Devil Rides out' you will probably like this. Not for everyone like I say, but what over game allows you to play a dark magic loving village Priest? https://store.steampowered.com/app/718670/Cultist_Simulator/

Stuart Galbraith
Yeah, I gather its part of the dev team behind Cold Waters I gather. Hopefully it will prove more realistic than that 'game'. I strongly suspect you will be able to similarly mod the hell out of it. One of the things like liked about Cold Waters was the ability to near infinitely mod weapons, sensors, even the background noise index for the sea. Made it far more difficult to pick up SSK's. Its worth also flagging up 'Gunner Heat PC' which is due out sometime this summer, its looking like it might become the definitive Cold War Tank Sim. https://store.steampowered.com/app/1705180/Gunner_HEAT_PC/ Edited July 10, 2022 by Stuart Galbraith

I grant, it's looking pretty. Tactical depth, let's see.
Stuart Galbraith
Yes, but steelbeasts is primarily a POST Cold War Tank Sim. I chose my words carefully. Besides they have already promised a fully crewable Centurion and possibly a Chieftain, so im easily bought armour whore.

Stuart Galbraith
Worth picking up 'Eagle Day to Bombing the Reich'. A very frustrating interface, but by God, its absolutely amazing what that game can do.
Stuart Galbraith
One other thing, High Fleet is worth picking up. Its not easy to get into, but by God its fun, particularly on the tactical battle stages. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hQGubvgIZY0

Skywalkre
While on vacation hanging with my buddy we were reminiscing about old games we used to play through high school and remembered this classic. Thankfully it's on GOG! https://www.gog.com/game/warlords_iii_darklords_rising Just downloaded it. Imagine I'll be losing most of the rest of the day playing it. Skywalkre
Heh... had to quit the first game I loaded up as the archaic UI took some getting used to but after that started and just finished a 5+ hour game. Was fun but also sad how a 25+ year old game is better than half a dozen more modern ones I've played in the last few months.
Captain Hurricane
Yes SSG certainly put out some good stuff in their time - Reach for the Stars and Carriers at War were my particular favourites, played many hours of both since the mid 80's, starting on an Apple 2 and graduating later to PC. Stuart Galbraith
Should be doable using a Dos box. Ive used it to play Infocoms 'Trinity'.
Tim the Tank Nut
I have an actual CD of Clash of Steel. I did use DosBox to make it work. Even got the sound playing, of course you have to have an optical drive... It's really a simple but fun game. It is possible to hold France in 40 but it takes a lot of effort
