Germany Restarts Coal-Fired Generation to Support Winter Power Supply

Government officials in Germany have approved a plan to bring some shuttered coal-fired power plants back online in an effort to avoid energy shortages this winter.

Cabinet members on Oct. 4 said they would support putting on-reserve lignite-fired power plants back online from now until the end of March 2024. It’s another move related to Russia’s ongoing invasion of Ukraine, which resulted in a drop in imports of Russian natural gas to Germany and much of Europe over the past two years.

Germany reactivated some coal-fired power plants last year, and extended their operating lifespans. Government data showed about 1.9 GWh of electricity was generated from coal last winter. Officials said they will study coal-fired generation this winter and decide next summer on plans to offset increases in carbon emissions. They also said they remain committed to a phase-out of all coal-fired generation in the country by 2030.

The country’s economic ministry said several coal-fired units operated by energy companies RWE and LEAG at their Niederaußem, Neurath, and Jaenschwalde power plants will be temporarily reactivated until March of next year to provide more security for Germany’s electricity supply. Those units also operated last winter due to the reduced supply of natural gas from Russia, and were on standby this past summer. (...)

100 percent capacity of national gas storage reached today, a couple days earlier than last year. Prices are half of last winter, and below the last pre-war one, too. Unless there's a combination of a cold winter and sudden economic boom, we should be okay. Again.

Are their several sources for the gas? Where is it coming from?

Norway (pipeline) and LNG predominantly, and other (pipeline) sources

The distribution between sources hasn't really changed from May, just the total has dropped from ca. 3,000 to 2,500-ish GWh per day. That reserves are still building up indicates that demand has dropped due to warm weather, private saving and a slow economy; we're still in a recession.

I mixed up my price references BTW; it was in the last pre-war winter that they were half of the last, ca. 70 vs. 140 Euro per MWh. Currently at 40-50.

LNGCanada should be coming online in a couple of years, making Canadian LNG available to the international market for the first time. Previously it had all been sold to the US at reduced prices.

Oh noes!

Nobody could see that coming. These are all good people!

There's a decision for another NPP in Poland, this time with 2 Korean APR-1400 reactors. The other one is supposed to have 3 Westinghouse AP-1000 reactors. We still have a 'previous' government in power, but the new one will likely be pro-nuclear too, at least according to declarations of the leader of the biggest party of the future coalition.

By the way i do not see it mentioned here: since the middle of this week, electric power grid of Ukraine is reportedly recieving emergensy inflows of power from EU power grid to keep afloat, as temperature is falling and population is switching to electric heaters to compensate for missing central heating.

Cross border power sales are common here in North America, nothing wrong in supporting an ally in this case.

Y'all are just exporting cheap LNG to ensure Americans have working gas stoves on which to cook pancakes requiring maple syrup. Yer not foolin' anyone.

Big Corn and the Karo Kartel will just hire the crew that did the Nord Stream job.

Maybe a pipeline for transporting maple syrup should be built?

No. It would make the supply more vulnerable to the Horvath.
