They were the last ones to go from the whole Phantom fleet, IIRC.

I think this is not correct. By wild weasel with F-4 is usually thought US F-4G which Germany doesn't have.

Germany had RF-4E and F-4F and few F-4E used for training.

No, we did not have any F-4Gs. The last to go were pure fighters. F-4F ICE with AIM-120 and the APG-65Y.

Their recon Phantoms were armed, maybe it refers to that?

Would not surprise me, locally MiG-21 were adored, as were F-86s before, while both were widowmakers.

Pretty much all 1950's jets were "widowmakers."    The percentage of aircraft manufactured that were lost to accidents often exceeds 40%.

Even many of the trainer aircraft often had deadly 'snap stall' characteristics. Amazingly, this was considered a good thing, since it was better that a trainee crashed an inexpensive training aircraft, than an expensive fighter.

T-6 Harvard off WW2 for one. The Tiger Moth also had some quirks.

I gather in Holland (or was it denmark?) any Tiger Moths have to be modified with an ugly triangular tail, which I gather gives more authority in a spin.

It was Holland.
