glenn239 Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 Bojan, can you comment on this? Six Chinese Y-20 transports just delivered an advanced SAM system to Serbia? China makes semi-secret delivery of missiles to Serbia | The Star

Ah, now it makes sense. Yes, I can see why this can be a problem. I suspect that would have been an issue for Greece as well. I guess that's an extra reason why Rafale looks like an attractive choice.
wendist Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 Thank you for the explanation Bojan. When this is touched upon by media here it is usually portrayed as an advantage, that Saab is able to provide a full package (airframe+training+possible shared future development) and that it is something the end user wants and benefits from.
TrustMe Posted April 10, 2022 Posted April 10, 2022 (edited) I wonder if this is related to the Croatian Rafale buy. I guess they need something equal or as good. Edited April 10, 2022 by TrustMe
bojan Posted April 10, 2022 Author Posted April 10, 2022 No. Initial talks actually predates that one, and have started few years ago, when Russian choice has became no go.

DB Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 I suppose it depends on what flight hours can actually qualify you. If it needs to be fast jet time, then you ned a jet trainer. If something like the Pilatus or Embraer advanced turboprop trainers count, then you have more chance. You might even get into a situation where someone has time in an advanced turboprop trainer, but it isn't counted because it isn't one they recognise. There's only so much that industrial offsets can compensate for - if you won't train people to fly the thing, they're not going to buy it.

There were also some language requrements that Sweden insisted on, while other again offered additional training. Since at that moment Serbian AF had 4 operational MiG-29s, there was no way for pilots to have 120hours for 3 last years... It was the same with Croatia, basically no MiG-21 pilot fulfill requirements.
TonyE Posted April 11, 2022 Posted April 11, 2022 (sniffsniff) I will miss the croatian FrankenMigs.😪

Markus Becker Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 https://justthenews.com/government/security/china-sends-missiles-serbia-through-nato-airspace So what?! Like Serbia is going to start the ... at least 4th Balkan War.
urbanoid Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 Judging by the headline you'd think they launched them from China.
bojan Posted April 12, 2022 Author Posted April 12, 2022 Breathless journalism is breathless. Turkey and Bulgaria OKd transit.
DB Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 It would be funny if it hadn't prompted a raft of stupid speculation about China's apparent ability to project power via strategic air ALL THE WAY TO EUROPE!!!!111!!
sunday Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 What will you all trust? Your knowledge of things military, or the mainstream media. Do not be like that kind of contrarian conspiracy theorists! 😁
BansheeOne Posted April 12, 2022 Posted April 12, 2022 Uh, guys ... this is "Just The News", who run Hunter Biden Corruption Ukraine Aaargh! stories and stuff. They're on the level of the "Washington Free Beacon", which threw a fit about Russian aircraft and submarines traveling through "US strategic waters" any time they came within 200 miles of CONUS, and blamed it on Obama for cancelling some future procurement program. Not exactly a base for serious debate.

Yes, and the "story" showed up on a wide bunch of "National Interest" / "Business Insider" clone aggregator sites that contaminated by Google "news" feed for days. Crappy sites like "19forty5", or something like that.

alejandro_ Posted April 19, 2022 Posted April 19, 2022 (edited) I think a Tranche 1 sale is unlikely because spares are harder to find and they don't have any advanced AG capability. https://www.janes.com/defence-news/air-platforms/latest/serbia-interested-in-new-surplus-eurofighter-typhoons-from-uk Edited April 19, 2022 by alejandro_
