I decided to go through and try to eliminate unit redundancy in the US Army part.  The main combat arms (Armor, Infantry, Field Artillery) are complete.  Aviation is still a work in progress.  Decided to lay it out in a different way than the original orbat so it was easier for me to find the redundancies and correct them.

Just one small change that I see.  1-166 IN was part of the 73rd IB (OH ARNG) in 1989

LouieD,

Gotta love the FA Redbook!!  Always has good info.  I always found it a bit odd that my former unit (1-136 FA) was listed as a "Separate Battalion" when we were organic to the 73rd IB.  But breaking that out may have made the list more clunky...

From the perspective of the Artillery School, it did not have a higher FA command (DIVARTY, FA Brigade, etc), so it was a separate. The whole list of separates in the Redbook is the battalions assigned to the separate brigades.

Since you were there, how ready do you consider these formations to go toe to toe vs the Soviets? would they need substantial training before deployment?

I can only speak to my experience with my unit and to some degree, our parent brigade.  We were reservists and as such our training time was limited.  At the battery level, our gun crews were probably on par with any in the active force.  Training at the battalion level was less extensive, but the battalion never failed to pass our evaluations to standard.  Our mobilization plans called for 30-45 days of pre-deployment training.  Looking back, we probably needed 60+ to more realistically be "ready" for combat operations.  I'm honestly not sure how we would have fared.  The 73rd Infantry Brigade had a Theater Defense mission for the Aleutian Islands, so my guess is that our most likely opponent would have been Soviet Naval Infantry.  Not exactly an easy ask...

Hi mates, how are we advancing on NATO OOB update front :)

I finished translating YPA ground force OOB, next is air force and navy and then I will update and finish notes

And then is Albania...

All should be finished in week or two max, could be finished much faster if is needed

Perun,

Were you able to complete your redo of the YPA ORBAT?  I'm interested to see the new info that you've obtained.

Was the question about including naval forces ever answered?  I'm currently trying to nail down a US Navy ORBAT for 1989, but getting good info can be challenging.  You really need to set a specific date for the ORBAT to be accurate.  Otherwise it becomes a mess of notes for who is currently deployed where and when.

"Who is in charge here?"  Always a key question... 😉

Does someone have a Dropbox or Google Drive folder that could be used?
