NATO ORBAT Update?

The Osprey book "Tank War - central front NATO v Warsaw Pact" gives a division level review of the armies involved in around the 1989 era. It however doesn't go into detail on the divisions other than giving a overall number of tanks owned by the various countries.

For example from what I understand a Soviet Tank Division had around two thirds the personnel of the equivalent US Tank Division so tread carefully.

It did, but the idea was to throw it away after 3 or 4 days and use the second echelon. They would then rebuild it with units recovered from the battlefield and keep it in reserve. Whereas of course, the idea for Western Armies was to keep a Division in combat till it essentially was destroyed.

Ok mate.

I started translating Yugoslav section of OOB, it should be finished in few days then I will start translating Albanian people's army OOB. Last one YPA OOB included in NATO OOB (non aligned european countries part) is rather fundamental and highly incomplete. Dragoon's OOB although good is also incomplete and has many errors. New one, wich I translating, is 99% accurate and complete. My source is book wich used official documents for making OOB. Yugoslav people's army is hard to 100% complete because at that time reorganization was constantly, especially of smaller units.

I dont want to criticise Dragoon's work, his work was excellent, and in those days I started with his OOB until I found book with highly complete and accurate YPA OOB.

Hi All --

It appears that the version of the NATO OOB on microarmormayhem.com is the most current version currently available... which, of course, means that I've not been able to recover anything from my wrecked portable hard drive.  Let's use that as a starting point.

Hello Perun

Try this website about the history of the Belgian Forces in Germany which I only discovered very recently:

http://users.telenet.be/evbbmb/BSD2.htm#_De_wapens_(soorten_1

it includes maps of what Belgian brigades were stationed where in Germany at various times from 1945 to 1993. Also pretty useful info on equipment used and some organisational information.

Pat,

If you don't mind I am going to try and redo the U.S. Army section this weekend, wartime missions and assigned units for the Divisions to start with.

  • 2 months later...

I decided to go through and try to eliminate unit redundancy in the US Army part.  The main combat arms (Armor, Infantry, Field Artillery) are complete.  Aviation is still a work in progress.  Decided to lay it out in a different way than the original orbat so it was easier for me to find the redundancies and correct them.
