There are certain things that can be done. Interferometric synthetic aperture radar images can detect the kind of ground heave (it can be millimetre scale) that is often associated with the lead-up to an eruption, but it's not easy (or perhaps even possible) to accurately assess the detailed geological formations involved.

At least with this type of eruption there's time to move - it's not gone off like Mount St Helens, or generated a pyroclastic cloud.

Yes, that works well but it provides only point data. In theory at least, SAR provides very good area data. I think it was first demonstrated well in Italy for earthquake regions, but the same principles hold.

In Italy, of course, scientists go to prison for not reading the tea leaves correctly. I suppose it's a step up from ceremonial sacrifice to appease the gods.

I think they use differential GPS to measure inflation of volcanos now. Currently, in the middle of the eruption, there is an inflation of 15 cm, quite large.

https://www.usgs.gov/observatories/hawaiian-volcano-observatory/deformation-monitoring-tracks-moving-magma-and-faults

This was detected days ago, being 10 cm right before the eruption, but the locals believed the eruption was going to happen in the South, like the Teneguia. It's bad because it happened in the part of the island that is flatter and more inhabited, but not as bad as a hillock separates it from Los Llanos, which is the largest town on that side. It's going to destroy the banana plantations for sure, and I suspect also a hotel as it gets to the sea, plus it will cut the ring road, which is a big thing as it only leaves the tunnel to get to Santa Cruz or you take the road through El Roque, which is like going up a 60º slope to the top all the time...

Destroying banana plantations?

It's an ill wind that blows nobody any good. Can't stand bananas.

You are in luck then, La Palma concentrates 35% of the Canaries production.

New vent. More people evacuated.

Edited to add: Lava is slowing as it cools, sea entry is expected for tomorrow.

Edited again to add: Interesting twitter entry that shows in the first pic the general topography of the island in 3D and the eruption site, and in the second picture a comparison between two images of SAR satellite with the before and the after of the eruption, showing the lava flows.

Edited to add: Close up of the new vent.

There is a great panoramic view of the volcano and the island in this video:

Edited to add:

Some satellite-based maps of the lava flow here.

Edited to add:

Some close up videos of lava destroying structures

Edited to add:

People is saying volcano inflation is still growing, probably up to 23cm, in spite of the volume of lava ejected. That could be worrisome.

I did think about all the ribbing you would be receiving if that sorry excuse of a human being was your congresscritter, and...

🤣

Sorry, man, that was a tough card you were dealt.

What's sad is that he's an improvement over Cynthia McKinny.

And he's not nearly as grotesquely corrupt as our Former Sheriff Sidney Dorsey. Dorsey was our Sheriff from 1996 to 2000. He was the First African American Sheriff of DeKalb County. He lost an election to a county police captain, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Derwin_BrownDerwin Brown. Dorsey was so unhappy about it he promised a former deputy a promotion to a better job if he'd kill the sheriff elect.

Well Considering I've met LawDog, Peter, Dot, and Old NFO in person it's crossed my mind. I'm not ready to give up on Georgia yet though. And frankly I like bigger mountains than Texas has.

I have my eye on Western North Carolina or Eastern TN. If I could find a Data Center to run in the I81 valley near Bristol Knoxville , I'd be gone in a minute.

Pity Colorado is off limits now...

It is cool you have met those characters. I think it is likely you were among the audience of the first apparition of LawDog in a con.

John Ringo too, as you made an apparition in one of the Thermopylae books. What happened to him? Lots of time since his last book.

I've seen fragments of that video, but not that cut.

Note the first pool is a residential one, while the second is an irrigation pond. Use of that land is mixed, some agricultural, some are quite nice retirement homes. Among the retirement homes dwellers there are lots of Germans.

Texas has some 5,000, 6,000 and 7,000 foot peaks, a fair bit taller than what Georgia has to offer.

In this and floods cases building in a high level in relation to nearby surroundings is important.

Problem is a new crater could very well open in the same ridge as your home, but a bit upslope. All the houses destroyed were built quite high.

I think the best practice would be not to build nor buy anything built in the flank of a volcano whose last eruption was less than 500 years in the past.

However, try going and persuading a wealthy, especially boomer, German that he shall not put the house of his dreams on top of a volcano that erupted less than 100 years ago.

Yep, thats me in the Maple Syrup war, Gordon Highlander Trews and all. Talk to john enough and he will red shirt you.

As far as the bloggers go, I actually am part of a small circle of folks on an IRC channel that Lawdog was sporadically on. More or less a bunch of the older Gun Bloggers. Folks like, Farmdad, Farmgirl, Farmmom, Rob Allen, PDB, Breda Fallacy, Marooned, Old NFO, Ambulance Driver, Phlem Fatale (Lawdog’s better half iirc) and a bunch of others. Peter was on there too. We chatted bit about African bush war stuff there. Wing somehow globbed onto the channel and I think she met Peter that way. She was on there before she flew her piper down from Alaska. She my have met him via Oleg. But then Oleg is also on #gbc…. I’d have to ask to ask her.  Oleg and Wing came to Dragoncon 2015 or so before she and Peter moved to Texas. So I got to meet her face to face there. Peter does NOT do big crowds. So no Con for him.

What was really fun was was watching the Mil Sci-fi crowd discover Lawdog…John Ringo was in awe at Lawdog’s ability to spin a tale at Liberty con 2015. Old NFO has some good African bush flying stories too.

John has issues with his muse. I don’t know the details, but people pestering him to finish one of the books is not good. More or less she has gone silent on him . When she starts talking again he’ll slam out another 5 books or so.

He slammed out the MHI Grunge books in very short order. Much faster than Larry could read and edit them  When he has a story it basically fills up his brain until he can dump it out. Paladin of Shadows actually got jammed up in his head before he could get more of, I think the Prince Roger, books out. So, just to clear his head, he typed out the books and sent the manuscripts of to Toni Weisskopf just to show what was messing with his muse. He figured she’s look at them and trash em. Instead she tweaked them and sent him a contract. Much to his monetary delight and creative annoyance.

Oh becoming a target for harassment by the CHORFs at cons hasn’t helped.
